My mum received good news last week. The oncologist rang us and said that my mum's tumour had shrunk and said in her own words that it's "excellent news." I asked if they're still aiming to cure my mum and she said that they are. My mum will start immunotherapy soon.
My mum also has other minor things that were detected when she had her scans for the cancer such as kidney stones and a benign tumour in her adrenal gland. These were found back in February when my mum had her tests for cancer. Apart from confirming the cancer and an aneurysm (which has a low chance of bursting and my mum will have a simple procedure done at some point to clip it), the doctors never mentioned the benign tumour to her; they only wrote it in the letter.
I looked it up and this adrenal adenoma is a benign tumor that rarely causes problems and is mostly left alone. Also the adrenal adenoma is mostly always an incidental finding found in scans looking for other things. My mum also has kidney stones which the doctors wrote in the letter and didn't mention in person either.
Even though this benign tumor is nothing to worry about, I worry that what is the doctors made a mistake and it's really a metastatic lesion.Do you think that if the doctors thought that if the tumour was suspicious then they'd know? Also do you think that they'd tell my mum in person if they were concerned about the tumour? Do you think that they left it out because they didn't think it was important or serious? They only mentioned the aneurysm and cancer in person and they felt that the aneurysm needed to be dealt with.
My mum also had a scan recently for the immunotherapy and it showed the shrinkage. They also wrote on the letter that my mum has a liver cyst (which I read that is also not serious) and they confirmed the adrenal adenoma which hasn't changed in size since the last scan and that it has low attentuation (which I read is a sign that it's benign). The doctor didn't mention the liver cyst or the adrenal adenoma over the phone, so is it likely that they thought it wasn't important or serious?
I feel that my mum's illness has made me more anxious even though she's on the mend, but I'm scared that something will go wrong or the doctors got it wrong. The doctors have been really brilliant otherwise and so thorough.
My mum is 70 btw and apparently all these findings like cysts and benign lesions are common in older people.
