Unsuccessful chemo

So I finished my first course of chemo last month, and after having the recent PET scan it turns out that the cancer did not respond and has come back. I was devastated to hear this, as I had shown good response to the chemo through treatment, good enough to have a drug taken out of the treatment sooner than halfway through my 6 month treatment.

Also since I have finished my chemo, I have developed a fairly big lump in my armpit, which at the moment I don't know if it's something related to my current cancer or something new. Depending on the results of the ultrasound and biopsy, I may need to have a bone marrow transplant, requiring 3 weeks in hospital.

It kinda feels like my whole life is crashing down at the moment.

  • I am in the same position. I had 6 rounds of chemo and mid way scan showed good response. Final scan showed refractory disease. I then had 20 sessions of radiotherapy and I'm currently sat at home waiting for my oncologist to ring with the results of my latest scan to decide what the next step may be. It's looking likely that I will need to have high dose chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant.

It literally feels like you've been punched in the gut when you hear the words that your chemo was unsuccessful. The entire time you're going through the treatment you think it's all worth it if it works and to find out it hasn't is soul destroying. It is difficult news to hear but you've just got to keep looking forward to the next step. At least that's what I'm trying to do. X

  • Hi

Thanks for your reply Needless to say I was hearbroken to hear that the chemo had failed, i didn't show much if any signs that there was a problem with it. And seeing the new lump that has developed, I can't help but naturally feel scared, as it could be something worse. And to be honest, I'm not loving the idea of having to have a bone marrow transplant, but if needs be ... I was told that if it happens, then I'd have to stay in London for 3 weeks, so on one, a 3 week free hotel stay ... just a shame it's under the wrong circumstances
