Worried about my mum's scan

My mum was diagnosed with non-small cell inoperable stage three lung cancer in February. The oncologist said that they're aiming to cure her and that immunotherapy is part of her treatment plan. My mum had intensive radiotherapy and chemo. She finished her treatment about a month ago and had the CT scan on Friday. On Wednesday the oncologist will ring her.

I'm so scared that the treatment hasn't worked and what if the cancer has spread or hasn't improved even with treatment. My mum says that she isn't worried especially as with the intensive treatment that she was given it should have gotten rid of at least some of it and that immunotherapy will take care of the rest.

I'm scared what if they change their mind about giving her immunotherapy. They said that she is suitable because of her cancer type. I have so many fears. My mum is going to have a chat tomorrow about the immunotherapy at the hospital. So does this mean that they want her to go through with it despite the results? They want her to come in person. My mum thinks that they'll want her to sign stuff like she had to before starting chemo.

I'm scared that I got my hopes up too much. Where my mum is being treated is a very good cancer hospital with an excellent reputation. I'm scared that it wont be enough. The oncologist did seem really positive when I met her (before my mum started the treatment).

  • Hello catlady91
Just wanted to post to ask how Mum got on at her appointment. Hopefully they were able to give her some news and information that has answered some of your questions and maybe settled some of the anxieties that you've been experiencing.

You mention in your post that your Mum is being treated at a specialist cancer hospital with an excellent reputation and that the Oncologist has been very positive through all this. Try to keep hold of those facts when you feel that you're struggling with all this.

Do let us know how she got on if you're able to.

    Best wishes,

  • Thanks for replying Jenn. My mum had the meeting with a consultant yesterday about immunotherapy. I wasn't able to go with my mum because of the COVID19 regulations. She said that the Dr said it was good news and that the tumor has shrunk. He said that it still may be swollen and even after finishing radiotherapy the effects orlf radiotherapy still continue to work.

My mum was disappointed that they didn't get rid of all of this. Is this unrealistic thinking? The consultant seemed please and everyone else thinks that it's good news. They're still going to give my mum immunotherapy which I'm glad about. My mum's oncologist is ringing her tomorrow to discuss the results. I'm really scared even though the tumor has shrunk. I'm scared that it hasn't shrunk enough. Just to note that my mum finished radio and chemo a little less than a month ago.

  • My mum's tumor shrunk from around 3.7cm to 2.2cm

  • Hi Catlady

It sounds like your Mum has had lots of good news then in that the tumour has responded to the treatment so far and that they are going ahead with the immunotherapy as planned. I'm sure if the Consultant had any concerns they would have mentioned these to your Mum.
I think it's natural that Mum may feel a little disappointed that it hadn't gone completely however it's really important now that you both focus on being positive for this next phase of her treatment. I hope that the phonecall with the Oncologist goes smoothly tomorrow. I'm going to tag in [@Dor06]‍ (hope you don't mind Carol! ) as I know that her husband has been having immunotherapy for quite some time for lung cancer so she may be able to offer some pointers.

    Sending my best wishes,

  • We had the consultation today and the oncologist confirmed that the tumour had indeed shrunk and she said in her own words that it's "excellent news." To hear that from the oncologist is really great. I asked the oncologist if they're still aiming to cure mum and she said yes. Mum will be having immunotherapy as planned which she starts in two weeks.

Thank you so much for your support Jenn. I feel so happy about the news but so sad for the people on this site who don't get good news.
