Shielding

Had breast cancer 12 years ago and have a reacurrance of Breast Cancer  it is Stage 1 but Grade 3. I have had a Masectomy and due to have 4 rounds of chemotherapy in around 2 weeks. Having chemotherapy before I know what to expect. I have had a shielding letter. The letter suggests I get fresh air if possible by sitting in the garden.  It has already been hard not seeing my family grandchildren or friends. I asked my chemotherapy nurse this question regarding my 3rd week of chemotherapy when I felt I had a bit of normality back.

if a person bought their own fold up chair and own drink, did not enter my house but entered  through the side of the house. As long as they sat at least 6 feet away could they come and  say hello as it was family and friends that really helped me get though the chemotherapy last time? I was told no. Do you think I am putting myself at risk ?

  • These are very tough times at the moment and I'm sorry that you've not been able to see your family whilst you've been on your cancer journey.

I know you really want to see them but if your chemo nurse has said it isn't safe then it is best to follow their advice as you don't want to put yourself at risk before having your chemo.

If you'd like to discuss this with one of our cancer nurses do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Wishing you all the best for 2 weeks time Madelaine.
