Post Surgery Sports Bras

I'm after some advice and recommendations that anybody can offer me.  I had a mastectomy and reconstruction on 17 March 2020 (implant + latissimus dorsi flap).  Implant removed two weeks laters due to infection but flap retained so, currently uneven in size. No further treatment required as caught very early.   I will be having my reconstruction finished in due course but, in terms of exercise  I will  need a high impact sports bra with pockets to hold my prosthesis.  I was wondering if any ladies who have been in a similar position could offer any recommendations?

Many thanks

  • Hi Bloggs and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sure some of our ladies will offer their recommendations soon but do feel free to use the 'search forum' option in the blue bar above to join in on any discussions you find about this as well.

I hope you're able to find the right bra for you and that all goes well with your reconstruction when the time comes.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Bloggs,

Welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear that you developed an infection in your reconstruction. I had a bilateral mastectomy 11 years ago. I have tried several bras, but find that the best one for me is M&S's Total Support range. They do this as an ordinary bra, but also as a post-surgery bra with pockets for your prosthesis. This is not a sports bra as such, but I find that it is suitable for most occasions. They also supply post-surgical sports bras, but I find most of these too heavy and uncomfortable for everyday use. Not all shops stock the post-surgical bras but they are available online and for ordering in store. Some of the bigger shops do however store them.

Asda also supplies post-surgery bras, although most of these are only available online now. I found that they were much cheaper than M&S, but the support wasn't so good. There are also a number of mail order suppliers, although most of these are quite expensive. However, you get what you pay for, as some of these are quite fashionable. Amoena and Nicola Jane are the first two that come to mind.

I hope that you don't have too long to wait before you manage to get your reconstruction completed. Do keep us posted on how you get on with your bra. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
