Womb cancer and mirena coil

Hi all I was dignoised with cancer in my womb it's spreaded in the muscle and was recommended a full hysterectomy, but I recently had a second opinion appointment and the doctor said that I recently had the mirena coil so he wants to see me in 3 months time to see the hormones in the coil helping the cancer to go, but if the cancer has spreaded more or cancer still the same he wants to do a hysterectomy leaving ovaries behind. So what can I do to help cancer go or shrink if it could anyway.

I'm 24 years old with no kids and also was advices to lose weight which of course would help.

please help on what I can do to improve my situation thank you!

  • Hopefully you'll hear back from some of our members soon Chan but whilst you wait I thought I'd give you our cancer nurses telephone number so you can give them a call about this as well. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Fingers crossed the mirena coil helps.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Chan2323,

I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I'm 31 and I've been diagnosed with grade 1 cancer, they think it's only in the endometrial layer.

How did you get on with the coil? I had the coil put in too, as I really want children.

My first biopsy showed no change and then my body expelled the coil 2 weeks ago, so I'm hoping to get it out back in soon.

I've also been advised to lose weight but I haven't been given any support with this. I feel the consultants sometimes look down on me as a lost cause because of my weight. They don't have time to talk to me. I mostly hear from them in cc to other doctors. I hope you had a better experience.

Looking forward to hearing back from you.

  • The mirena coil is helping me and honestly it's the best thing, I was dignosed with grade 1b and then after mirena coil was fitted after I think 3 months I had a repeated biopsy and dignosed with grade 1a , my oncologist is very supportive my bmi in September 2020 was 41 so was advised for weight loss surgery because I couldn't lose weight easily because of pcos and got gastric sleeve in november 2020.

But recently my oncologist put me on 400mg a day of provera from 200mg

  • I'm so glad to hear you are doing well  and that there are still steps that can be taken that don't require hysterectomy and can cause cancer regression. Most of the stories are about hyperplasia and so it was hard to know how cancer responds.

Would you recommend the weight loss surgery? It's been mentioned for me (BMI greater than 40) but no one seems to know how to recommend me for it. Did you go back to your GP for them to do that or was it done by the consultant?

It's been 2 weeks since I expelled my coil and I've not had an appointment yet to put a new one back in. I understand that covid is causing havoc but it does make me feel very concerned that they are dropping the ball on my treatment. Though I was concerned that this was more widely expected because of my weight,  I definitely will seek a second opinion after hearing that some consultants are more supportive!

  • I do recommend the weightloss surgery but it's not easy recovery and it's a permanent lifestyle change but so worth it and I'm alot happier.. speak to your oncologist, my oncologist transferred me to an kind of pre assessment to speak of all options. Having cancer and having a high BMI your a priority so not long waiting list, research more in to it. Hope it goes well for you.

  • Thanks for all your help. All the best to you with your ongoing recovery
