Chemotherapy, Hair Loss and Wigs

To anyone reading this,

My mother had her first cycle of chemotherapy starting 3 weeks ago. Tomorrow she begins the second cycle.

Over the past week, mum has started to lose her hair in large amount. She had thin hair to begin with so it's only a matter of time before it shows.

Going forward mum will be having her chemotherapy treatment with the hospital's mobile unit, rather than at the hospital where the different members of the cancer team are. I'm guessing this is due to the Coronavirus outbreak, but I am just guessing. I digress.

Mum has been thinking about getting a wig and I had been hoping she would get to speak to her Breast Cancer nurse or appropriate member of the team about getting one. I don't know if this is still possible, is anyone else going through this dilemma at the moment?

I was thinking of buying mum a wig online but I don't know what I'm looking for really. I don't want to end up buying her a party wig.

Should the wig be made of a certain material?

Do I need to buy anything for underneath?

These may be silly questions but I've never actually encountered a proper wig.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Thank you

  • I would phone McMillan or the breast nurses to put you in touch with the wig specialists in your area. You are also given an amount towards to the wig by the NHS.  Before the corona virus the wig people came to the hospital and fitted you with a wig.
annabandana.co.uk sell scarves and jersey caps online  for hair loss. They are useful.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Silver,

Sorry it has taken so long for me to reply.

    Thank you for the information.

Mum asked at the hospital about wigs and they said they would get her in touch with the specialist, this was almost 3 weeks ago.

She's ordered a few fashion ones online, the one that has arrived looks really good although she's not 100% happy and she wants to play around with a few styles.

I did manage to order her a cap and she already bought a scarf but hoping she will be happy with the other wigs on the way.

    Thanks again

  • I found my wig specialist through McMillan at the Hospital, if you phone them they should be able to help to find someone in your area. I went to Robersons wigs but they are in West Sussex .

Hope she finds something to suit, Ive finished chemo now  and waiting for my hair to start growing impatiently!
