Breast Cancer Radiotherapy

I am due to start my radiotherapy treatment next month and hospital has offered me the 5 day program instead of the normal 15 days.

Apparently it is a higher dose and I am unsure about this, has anyone one else completed the 5 day treatment? If so what are your thoughts and what side effects did you encounter?

  • hi I spoke to my onco about this last week, I've got 4 weeks rads coming up but mine arent being reduced because of my age so she said that some people will have theres reduced to 5 days higher dose which is the 15 days but squashed into the 5, because I also need a weeks booster I'm unable to do this but also she did say that if ther is staffing issues then I will be sent to a different hospital rather than the hospital I'll be having it at, I presume that if theres is any issues with yours this will be the same though I'm not even certain if mine will be delayed yet

  • I've been called today as I am due to start 4 weeks of radiotherapy next week.  I've have been informed that they are going to do one week instead of 4.  I'm a bit anxious about it worrying it won't be enough but the don't want to risk 4 weeks because of the corona virus:  apparently it is a new trial they have been doing which they were probably going to introduce in hospitals in may.  Has anyone else had the treatment or a call to suggest this .

  • my onco told me that some people will get the 1 week dose instead of 3+weeks it just depends on lots of different factors but you will get your same dose treatment so I wouldnt worry to much.  mine doesnt fall into this category but then some women have had theres cancelled for awhile as we fall into different property levels with the covid19. I think there are 5 or 6 priority levels 1 being the worst maybe you can check on the nice website and you should be able to work out what priority your treatment lies, I.e if you've had your active treatment surgery or chemo then radiation is like a mop up of any stray cells which is category 5 i think but if radiation is for prolonging your life then that is category 1 so those patients will take priority over us hope this help hun x

  • Hi I've been offered 5 days of rads instead of 3 weeks can you tell me the age restrictions I read that  you couldn't have it because of your age .

  • Hi!
My chemo is being stopped (I had two sessions left) and radiotherapy has been brought forward within next few weeks, because of Coronavirus. The consultant had said it might be over a week as it's something they are trialling, but I'll know more after next week.

I had fourth chemo last Thursday and it my first dose of docetaxel and it has floored me. I had minimal side effects with the FEC but this is awful, constant sweating, sore throat and mouth, aches and zero energy, I haven't left my bed since Sunday. Ordinarily I could handle it but because of the scary times we are in I rang the helpline and they couldn't confirm if the symptoms were normal or if I could have caught the virus, it's just a waiting game. I had been self isolating for 3 weeks before my chemo appointment, continuously sanitised my hands while there and came straight home after so I don't even know how I could have got it. I am absolutely terrified and can't sleep with the stress. Anybody else have bad symptoms with docetaxel? Am I just being over sensitive?

  • Can you tell me what age category I'm 66 and still not sure if I'm doing the right thing thanks

  • my onco just said because of my age (32) I'll need a booster therefore cant have mine reduced to the 5 days. the way she described it was a woman of my age has the potential of a recurrence over say another 50+ years to live therefore the xtra boost is to lesson that chance of recurrence but a woman of say 70 years old has only 10+ years likely chance of recurrence because the statistics are based on 10 year overall survival rate that means that the woman of 70 years old has a better survival/ and or recurrence rate than my age if that makes sense. so even though your having your rads reduced to the 5 day doesnt mean your not getting the recommend dose it just means that your spending less time doing it and with what's going on at the moment less time spent at the hospital and outside is probaly the best thing x
