Breast cancer and corona virus

Hi I had lumpectomy for Dcis intermediate in January. However in the 7.5cm of tissue removed they found invasive cancer cells but the edges were clear. At the beginning of March I had sentinel lymph node removal and was due to go for results on the 30th. I was half expecting the call and after hearing Boris Johnson's speech last night even more so. First thing this morning I received the call asking me not to attend however the consultant is going to call me at the same time. Obviously until I receive those results I don't know my ongoing treatment. However I have other small areas dotted around the breast, one tested was benign but he wants me to have radiotherapy for 3 weeks to zap those. I feel this may be put on hold.

I have been on sick leave since January as couldn't deal with work. I am paid for 6 months full pay however I am concerned if this is delayed it will go past this. I am confused. if I fall into vulnerable group but have been self isolating due to awaiting results but find the website from the government isn't specific. Colleagues with asthma and heart conditions or living with a partner with a condition have obviously gone into isolation and won't affect their sick leave. My sick note runs out on 31st March but just wondered if I would be covered without a sick note due to my current diagnosis? I wouldn't have a problem getting a sick note but think doctors are stretched enough.

Any advice please?

Thanks in advance

Update... Caz1964 it.Won't let me reply

Got results over telephone... Lymph nodes clear and plan was to have radiotherapy and letrozole for 5 years. They hadn't had multi team meeting due to.virus at that point. Today I got call to say following that meeting my tissue is now on its way to America for. oncotype dx. To determine whether chemo would be beneficial. Not what I was expecting to hear but they are being thorough.

  • Hi Gemini1969 .... I am going through this at the same timeline as you. Lumpectomy and node removal at end of January. I was told I should need surgery and radiotherapy only - assuming that everything was as per the scans etc.  Results mid February showed that the expected 2.5cm tumour turned out to be 3cm with a further 2cm of DCIS so 5cm in total and cancer was found in 2 out of 20 nodes.
I was told I would need chemo (starting in April)  followed by radiotherapy and then Tamoxifen.  However - I had an oncology appointment yesterday (24th March) and was told that I cannot start my chemo due to Coronavirus! Its just too dangerous BUT I can have my radiotherapy in April instead as that does not pose the same danger and apparently it HAS to be carried out within 3 months of surgery or chemo ... so basically I am having my treatment in reverse. Started Tamoxifen yesterday, waiting for Radiotherapy to take place next month and then chemo hopefully in 3-4 months time .... its not ideal - I had prepared myself for the chemo and now it is still looming over me as something still to go through but its the same for lots of us at this crazy time!
I just wanted to give you a virtual hug (from a safe distance) and let you know that you are not alone and that radiotherapy is still taking place in my area (Oxfordshire) in preference to any other treatment, so hopefully it will for you too.  Stay safe and good luck xxx

  • Hi Caz1964, thank you for your reply there are so many in the same situation as us. Mine was initially thought to be 5cm but when he did lumpectomy he said it was 7.5. I was so shocked when he said invasive cells were in there too after just getting my head round that I had pre cancerous cells. Then I had further surgery and he removed 3 lymph nodes. Until I get results of those on Monday I don't know. I am still quite swollen and tender under my arm. Think it's all the waiting that's the worst part. I'm sure they will do what is right and best for us! I am in East Yorkshire and so far I have nothing but praise for the consultant and his team. Thank you for the virtual hug sending one back and stay safe xxx

  • Hi Gemini1969 .... absolutely agree ... the NHS / cancer services in our area have been fantastic too - cannot praise them highly enough ... especially with the current situation!
I'm sure you will be given all the treatment they think you need right now. I think the arm discomfort / sensation is, in some ways, worse than the lumpectomy! I am just starting to get the sensation back ... initially I had to look in the mirror to put roll on deodorant under there as I couldnt feel the ball touching my skin . Keep us updated on how you get on .... big hugs to you xxx

  • Hi Caz1964 - sorry tried to reply yesterday but all chat etc were turned off xx yes the numbness is weird and I am the same with deodorant and darent even shave my armpit yet! Luckily they don't grow quickly plus I don't have to show consultant on Monday now it's via telephone! Thank you and hugs back to you too and stay safe xxx
