COVID19 changed treatment - mastectomy advise please!

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all keeping well and self-isolating and getting all the things you need!

I have Grade 3 Invasive Ductal Cancer Triple Negative. I wasdiagnosed 2nd March and best option chemo to shrink, lumpectomy, radiation.

Today I am told no chemo, mastectomy and hope for the best.

Mastectomy advice welcome, actually any advise welcome, I am an ASAP patient, no spread, got to have the blue dye sentinel biopsy removal at the same time.

What a day

  • Hello Gistaline
I'm sorry to hear that your planned treatment has had to be changed due to Covid19. It's an incredibly unsettling time for lots of people and although your planned surgery has changed I would say try to hold on to the positives that you do know at the moment which is that there is no spread.

We have quite a few ladies on the forum who have had a mastectomy. Hopefully one of them will pop along to reply to your post but if you use the forum seaarch function you'll also find lots of posts that you can read through.

We have some information on our website here which may be of help and I'd also encourage you to give our team of nurses a call as I know they will be able to help with lots of advice and support. They are available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Sending best wishes,

  • Hi I sympathise. I was diagnosed with Her2 positive and er positive lobular cancer in December.
I only had three chemo sessions which has been stopped due to Coronavirus.
I was told best option was mastectomy now before nhs can't cope. I had three days notice.
everything happened quickly. Operation was outsourced to private hospital. Had it on Tuesday this week. Home yesterday. Doing well. Have been told follow up will take place maybe June.
worrying times. I had no issue wit the decision.  Better than doing nothing for months

i am doing really well after mastectomy. Good luck.

  • This is very similar to me - biopsy on 9 March, given IDC diagnosis on Tuesday this week and opted for mastectomy but told I had to say yes there and then or it would be drugs only till Covid crisis over. So I said yes. Hoping hospital will stay virus free until I've been and gone - op on 6 April... Getting a bit nervous now - more about op and virus than anything else! Hope we all come through it cough and cancer free...

  • Good luck.  Day two and I am doing fine mobile.   Did laundry cook8ng etc.
I think corona virus has taken over cancer concerns.
a lot of surgery being outsourced privately as mine was. I am in Londo where are you

  • Hi Krystiatennis,

Thanks for your reply -  I am really happy to be having the cancer taken now because I didn't want chemo tbh. I am due in on Tuesday so a bit longer notice and you will be a week ahead of me now so I will stay in touch, and glad you are doing okay.

  • Hi Noddysmate,

Yes I am a week in front of you so I will be your guiding light as Krysiatennis is being mine. I think I am relieved in a way not to have to have chemo and hopefully come out cancer free.

    Big hugs stay strong xx

  • Hey ladies

I am day 5 post surgery and doing great. Was terrified of the anaesthetic but other than being sick afterwards I was fine and home 3 hours after surgery.

Doing great, more discomfort than pain but can do basic household tasks like ironing and laundry and cooking although cant lift pans etc.

    Good luck tomorrow

    Thinking of you

  • Thank you , but my op has been cancelled as have the majority of cancer ops in Wales and England... Hormone treatment is the only way for me until the pandemic has either gone away or some way of managing its impact on the NHS is found. Trying not to worry. Good luck with your recuperation.

  • Ah [@Noddysmate]‍ I am sorry to hear that as I know you psych yourself up for it. Until I was sat outside the theatre I still had visions of it being cancelled. Mine was Triple Negative so no other route for me but surgery - I am sure they think there are benefits to the hormone therapy for you or they wouldn't try it, so I am rooting for you, here if you need it xx
