Son still at school, worried as I've stage 4 cancer

Hi

just wondering if anyone is keeping their children at home despite schools staying open?

I find it a bit odd that we are being told to reduce contact with others but our children are mixing at school and potentially bringing the coronavirus home - 8 years ago i was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer and had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy which all went well but I have now been diagnosed with stage 4 bowel and liver cancer. I'm not sure what to do and would appreciate anyone's views.

  • Hi Clare

I don't have children myself but my neighbour pulled me when I reached home tonight. From today, her children have been pulled out of school (all schools in our area are open) and she has been given instruction on homeschooling them for the time being. My neighbour has underlying health issues and the school were happy to support this. They've basically gone into isolation. Not sure if this helps....? xx

  • Hi,

I suggest you contact your current consultant for advice.

As I understand it, if you are no longer receiving treatment (chemo, immunotherapy etc) then you are at no more risk than anyone else - it's the chemo/immuno/steroids that affect your immune system that causes the risk. It doesn't mean you are more at risk of catching the virus, but it will affect you worse if you do catch it. Those currently on these treatments are at higher risk. The longer you have been without treatment the less risk, but you are still classed as vulnerable. However, if you are newly diagnosed with a different cancer, your consultant is the best person to give you advice.

I know several Stage 4 patients who are currently having chemo or immunotherapy and they have been told to keep their children at home & home school them.

    Good luck

  • I'm sorry to hear of your situation.

personally I would keep my child home. It's a decision I've made, I feel easter is around the corner so a few extra weeks at home will do him no harm. I'm not in treatment but after having my stomach removed last year I can't eat or drink enough to maintain my health normally so feel that getting the virus would scary. It's not worth the risk.

he's got a slight sniffle at the moment so could t send him in anyway but I'd decided last Friday that I'd keep him off. The school are being understanding and said there won't be penalties for kids staying off due to being around compromised people. You could always say you have a cough and need to isolate you all for 14 days, I think schools will close before the 14 days are up anyway.

hope you are ok and stay safe x

  • Hi thank you everyone.  I have spoken to his school and they are fine with me keeping him home - he has access to revision stuff from school and he promises to revise !!
