What is a stoma hernia?

I have a stoma after emergency surgery for bowel cancer my stomach is now very swelled around the stoma, it is also very uncomfortable.

It looks from the side like a breast .

Is this a hernia? If so what are the solutions?

  • Hello MikeA ,

sounds normal to me  and not a hernia, mine was about the size of a B cup. lt does retreat slightly but stayed raised until it was reversed 14 months later. As for any solutions, its grim and bear it l am afraid

  • Hi David,

Thanks for replying, did you try a support at all?

I am struggling to just grin and bare it.

How did your reversal go? Recovery time?

    Pain, discomfort?

    Mike

  • Hello Mike,

sorry to hear you are struggling currently.By support l presume if you mean something like a truss, the answer is no,but if you are struggling go back to your medical team for help and advice.l did say grim and not grin deliberately, since l hated mine with a vengeance.l was unfortunate to have had s stoma site that ended up in a poor position and would not heal,so l was placing bags on broken skin throughout. This was due to me being opened up for a liver resection six weeks before the bowel and stoma, and l was blown up and distorted with swelling still, so they could only make a stab at where eeverything would end up as my abdomen came back to near normal, and their guess was off.

The actual reversal was fine, the aftermath was challenging to put it mildly. If you had told me that it was possible for a person to go to the loo up to 30 times in an hour l would have poo-pooed it(sorry), As you stood up ,immediatly you needed to go again with an urgency so intense, You have little control over the issue ,when the bowel decides its coming out .After one of these sessions l could maybe get 2-3 hours off before starting again

They tell you its the new you when they rejoin,in my case approaching five years later my bowel has only recently decided to rejoin decent society. Its like being a newborn with a bowel that has to go through the phases of growing up again. What made my case worse was losing my gallbladder on the liver op and having a body that was zealous in producing bile inflammation.

Discomfort due to the feeling of constantly feeling the urge to go,and raw internal bleeding from doing so,pain in the sense that you just up a ladder say,and have to rush back down, repeatedly at times, jobs can stretch on along with frustration.

Strategically placed toilets,a motorhome allowing me to travel with facilities, accepting things take longer, and a strongwilled bloodyminded stubborness that l thanked my Mother for every single day saw me through.Even now after all this time l still see my bowel continuing to change for the better

l now have full control,go once or twice a day,morning/evening up to 3 times in succession, due to restriction at op site, and stools are thin, flattened but formed. It was one hell of a journey, but l continued to work on my farm throughout, and built my new home.l have never regretted my decision for a reversal ,often wished it was easier but never regretted.

We are all different, the damage left behind after the op is different ,and talking to others l realise l was at the top of the scale, many get back to near normal in months.

l hope you find your journey easier, and l am minded to tell you of the old man approaching his one hundreth birthday ,when asked how did he feel,he replied not bad if you consider the alternative,
