Breast screening missed my cancer

I had a letter today from the breast screening dept where I went for a mammogram the year before I was diagnosed. Of the 1,000 women screened around 3 will develop a breast cancer before their next 3 yearly scanning. This is called interval cancer. Most interval cancers are cancers that develop between screening, some are cancers that did not show up on mammograms and a small number are ones that have been missed.
My original X-ray was Category 1 . 'No evidence of cancer identifiable.'
How unlucky was I?

  • Hi, I too was one of the unlucky ones. I had my screening in September 2019 and then 5 months later was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was told it was slow growing, yet in that 5 months it grew from nothing to 33mm by the time I had  a mastectomy. I still don't understand it at all, how can it be slow growing if not there 5 months earlier? Hope you are on the road to recovery now .

  • Yes, that happened to me too, masectomy and 6 cycles of chemo, just had 2nd cycle. Lost my hair.  Then 3 weeks of radiotherapy, getting through but it's tough.

    How are you recovering?
