Exercise

I have just had emergency surgery after being diagnosed with Bowel Cancer and had a stoma fitted.

My stomach wall is now weakened and want to try and exercise to strengthen it any tips?

  • I've bad-mouthed Google sooo much before now, but... if you Google "The A-40 Core Set" under the Videos heading you'll get to a 7-minute video that gets down to business after wasting three and a half minutes of your time. Four exercises, ten repetitions each, take a short rest (I rest 30 seconds) then go again. It took me ages to get up to four times, takes about 5 minutes all-in. Don't expect day two to be as easy as day one, start off slow and easy then build up gradually - it's a marathon not a sprint. I'm 67 and I've got abs to die for

As always, if you start up a new exercise regime (or change your meds/treatment) tell your doctor/consultant all about it and get the okay before you start. And don't believe that "no pain no gain" BS - if it hurts, stop.

    Good luck, Steve

  • Thanks Steve,

Had a look at the video, I'm affraid thats well out of my capabilities just now the stoma I have had fitted is giving me issues and strain on that would not be good.

  • Hi Mike,

My apologies, I'll back-pedal a bit... If you're starting from scratch you could do a lot worse than just walking. I know it doesn't sound like a big deal but it's actually pretty good because maintaining posture while walking will exercise your midsection and you get the aerobic benefit too. You can decide how far to go, so a gradual build-up is easy to control and improvement easy to track. It pretty much ticks all the boxes.

    Have a speedy recovery,
    Steve
