Alcohol advice

Hello

My mum was diagnosed with myealoma a year ago and her out look was initially good but weve had little success with her chemos.

I feel like we are running out of options. Im quite scared but still hopeful....I'm just concerned that her diet and lifestyle may not be helping. She isnt a heavy smoker and she enjoys drinkinģ wine socially and the doctors have said that her diet wont be impacting on her treatment but Im not sure about this. What are anyones thoughts?

I wouldnt like to tell her what to do but im getting to a stage where i feel like I want to

Thank you everyone

  • Hello Squirrel2,

While her diet may not impact on her treatment, Smoking can alter the way your body processes chemotherapy drugs and increases your chance of developing complications from her cancer treatment. Smoking during cancer treatment can increase the toxic side effects from chemotherapy and decrease your response rate to chemotherapy and radiation. Alcohol can also interfere with the way some chemotherapy drugs works. We have some information here. Your doctors and nurses giving the treatment will be able to give you specific advice about whether drinking alcohol is safe with her chemotherapy drugs but she should seek help to stop smoking. If you are attending your mum's next appointment, I'd suggest you ask her doctor about how they can help her with her smoking and drinking.

    I hope this helps,
