I have stage 3/4 kidney cancer just 3 years after losing my

I lost my mum to kidney cancer, clear cell renal cancer that had spread, apparently her kidney tumour was 18 cm and unfortunately it had already spread to her bones and she died 10weeks after diagnosis. I myself was diagnosed with kidney cancer on 02/09/2019 after losing almost 2 stone in a matter of months. My symptoms pointed to problems with my bowels, however a CT scan revealed a 12cm cancerous tumour in my left kidney. It’s at stage 3/4 I had 2 sessions of immunotherapy that didn’t agree with me and I have been admitted to hospital since diagnosed 4 times. Infection after infection plus have had 9 blood transfusions! My treatment has now changed to targeted chemotherapy. I take a 40mg tablet at the same time every day.

l asked my consultant about the long term prognosis and he said it may not be curable but can be managed for years. The prospect of never being cancer free and having to take medication that makes me feel tired and a bit off every single day is daunting there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Does anyone know if just chemotherapy tablets can actually shrink a tumour? Also how long can it be controlled? I’m 47.

  • I'm so sorry about all the infections and blood transfusions you've had happydays but I hope the targeted chemo you've been switched to is helping.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will share their advice and experiences with you soon but if you'd like to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about this you can do so by giving them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi , I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis,  my husband was diagnosed 16th Sept,  stage 4 and spread to his lungs . There are 2 amazing support groups on Facebook which are a God send as so little support out there for kidney cancer. . Ikidney cancer UK support group , and kidney cancer support network . Theres always someone who's been on the same drug or has the same side effects and can advise you . There are people on who were told theyd maybe 2-3yrs and 6-7 years later they're still LIVING with cancer  not dying from it . It's such a supportive group , good luck x

  • Thanks for your reply and positivity it really helps x
