Penile cancer

Had first operation part of my penis removed got another 1 for lymph nodes in couple of weeks very sore sometimes hard to cope wearing bag at moment afraid to look down keep avoiding seems so much missing

  • Well done for getting through the first operation Ballylopin. No doubt it will be sore for a little while yet but if at any point the pain feels like it is becoming unmanageable do be sure to let your GP or medical team know as they may be able to provide something to relieve the pain.

In the meantime, try to take things a day at a time if you can and if you have any questions or just want to talk things through with someone then do give our cancer nurses a call. They're available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. You may also find others to chat to on this journey just here.

    Kind regards,

  • I know the feeling of being afraid to look down! In my case post-op my penis looked much smaller because it was very tightly bound. I only had a minor op, but when I looked down I thought 'where's it gone!!??' I assumed, for a few horrible minutes, that they have discovered that the cancer was far more extensive than expected, and taken the necessary action. But it turned out there was barely any difference at all. It was a huge relief!

I hope you are in the same situation, [@Ballylopin]‍. I assume you still have bandages. If these are tightly bound, like mine were, the penis will look much smaller.

  • Harry bandages off now cancer was worse had penis off they is another operation in few weeks for lymph nodes and to try build some of my penis back with skin graft just trying to take day by day at least today pain lot less unfortunately in my case it was late when they found cancer my doctors told me 6 months ago it was infection gave me antibiotics only December decided go private pain was getting so bad self funding that's first visit was told Cancer Christmas Eve within 2 weeks had loads of scans tests and operation just got wait see final outcome

  • Sounds very hard. And you were badly let down by the system as well.

I had what is called a sentinal node procedure for the lymph nodes. They remove a small number and, if they are ok, they assume that all of them are. If not they remove all of them. Mine were ok but I still have regular lymph nodes ultrasound.
