Hi
Wanted some advice regarding a friend whose been diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer - Stage 4.
Patient profile: Patient is 65 years of age so is post menapause.
Diagnosed with: Main tumour is around 6cm with very small mets showing in the lungs - based on a CT scan. Biopsy has also been completed.
Symtops: Very harsh pain on the lower left side just above the pelvis. Purely because of this tumour pain any attempt in walking is severly hindered and is causing chaos in quality of life.
Treatment offered: The Oncology Consultants immediately declined any type of surgery because it was Stage 4 and only offered palliative radiotherpy - with the aim of getting rid of excessive bleeding and prolognging life as it's now declared uncurable. Post 9 sessions of radiotherapy the excessive bleeding had stopped. The next course of action was Chemotherapy however due to the low performance status, the Consultants refused to give this at the time - They would review this in the future to see if things will change, and maybe offer it later. When asking to participate in any clinical trails they refused this as well purely because they refused the Chemo. They instead put my friend on hormone therapy by prescribing Letrozole tablets with the hope that this controls or stops or even shrinks the tumour. However based on my friends clear excessive abdominal pains, I really doubt this is having any affect whatsoever? My friend is currently on oral morphine in order to control the pain however even this is not proving any real help and is only causing severve drowsiness as a side affect.
My Concerns: 1) I really feel as if the best level of treatment is not being offered. I've read on this forum other peoples cases with the same diagnosis and they've been offered a hysterectomy operation. I really feel if this was offered the main pain which is really destroying my friends life would be eased albiet not cured but relieved of significant pain.
2) Not being allowed to be part of a clinical trail.
3) I've acompanied my friend to the Consultant visits and they seem very dismissive of any questions we have and feel like they they want this meeting to be over with already.
Based on the above, can anyone please give any advice whatsoever with regards to this parciular case and if the level of treatmenat offered is enough, is correct, maybe something else can be done or even going down the second opinion route.
Thanks in advance!
John
