How common is recurrence?

Just thinking really, how many of us go on to get secondary cancer, I actually expect it to happen at some point, I really hope it doesn't but it seems very common.

    Hi Ploppy,

There are a number of different factors that govern whether or not we will get recurrence. These include type of cancer, grade of cancer, Whether or not it is receptive to hormone treatment, age and general health of person, whether or not it was possible to remove the entire tumour at surgery and, how well the individual responds to treatment regimes.

I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 10 years and like you, I now expect it to happen at some point. Another factor is that my mum developed secondary breast cancer after having primary for 12 years. The closer I get to the 12 year mark the more I seem to be expecting it. However, I have done all that I was advised to do and, don't see any point in worrying about it, as this won't serve any purpose.

As far as I'm concerned, every day is a bonus and I shal live each and every day to the best of my ability. I hope that you can too!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

thanks for your reply. I'm sorry you've had to go through this twice, you're right though you just have to enjoy every second.

Im a different person since my diagnosis, a lot calmer, my bc was grade 1, no nodes, clear margins and I'm on tamoxifen, all positive factors, but already I'm wondering what my first mammogram after treatment in May will bring

    Hi Ploppy,

It sounds as if you have a good chance of being clear. Do you know what type of breast cancer you had?

    Kind regards,

    Jlamine xx

  • Hi Ploppy

I'm  wondering the same thing myself although  mine was different to yours in that I had a grade 3 triple negative tumour.

I had a complete  response  after my chemo and clear margins after my bilateral lumpectomy  and full axillary  clearance  as 2 nodes were affected.

I also had radiotherapy which finished in August but because I have the  Brca 1 gene I am  having another MRI and mammogram sometime in March so they can monitor  me as my surgeon is not prepared  to put me forward for bilateral  masectomy  and reconstruction  until August at the earliest, and so I find myself in fear on a daily basis.

I'm sure you will be fine but as Jolamine  has said it will serve no purpose at all.

Try and enjoy everyday and always have things to look forward  to as that's what I've been doing myself and finding  it helps.

  • Hi Jolamine,

I had invasive ductal carcinoma, which type did you have?

  • Hi Mumof3angels,

im so pleased you responded well to treatment, sounds like they are going to keep a close eye on you, doesn't help with the anxiety though does it.

  • I had bowel cancer which came back after 3 years in the joining from surgery, had second surgery and chemo.

I'm going through another scare at the moment, I really hope it's nothing, don't know if I can cope with bad news a third time.

  • Hi Ploppy

No it certainly  doesn't  and I think until all my surgery  has been done I will be like this and it's really hard to manage some days but all my gp said was more counselling and increase medication.

    Hi Ploppy,

I had pure mucinous carcinoma, grade 1.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I have multiple myeloma, a relapsing/remitting cancer of the plasma cells in the bone marrow. I've just relapsed for the second time and start my third-line chemo treatment in two weeks. I'll be on it until it stops working, when something new will be tried.

    Ent ded yet
