Endometrial cancer

Hi I am 69 years old and was diagnosed with endometrial cancer in August 2017. It started with some spotting and bleeding and doctors referred me straight away to gyne. My womb lining was thickened so I had to have a byopsy done under general anaesthetic which resulted in diagnosis of stage 3 cancer. I had a complete hysterectomy done in the September and then had 25 external and 2 internal radiotherapy treatments. I had ct scans and mri scans done which did show now spread thankfully. In August again of 2019 I developed a cyst down below which was removed under GA I was in for the day. The results showed some cancer cells so I had to have another operation in the same area to remove extra tissue to see if it had spread. The results of that were no spread I also, had a pet scan done which again showed no spread. Unfortunately because of the internal radiotherapy my tissues down below are very delicate and during the last operation the surgeon nicked my bowel so what was a day operation turned into 48hours while I was pumped full,of antibiotics which I had to come home with for 5 days. These plus the movicol  I had to go on to prevent constipation while my bowel healed completely messed up intestines which were suffering after affect of the radiation. I don't want to frighten anyone about what I went through I am just writing to say I am still here a few aches and pains and quite a few bowel issues but enjoying life. The consultant put my womb cancer down to the tablet Tamoxifen I was on for 5years after breast cancer in 1999 as apparently it can cause womb cancer years later something I was not informed about. I know it's hard to say but try not to worry hospitals take their time in giving you results as I know as after I had the last pet scan done all I wanted was the results and I was screaming inside "tell me tell me" as the consultant waffled on about other things. I found the best people to talk to are the oncology nurses I have a fabulous one if I have to phone up she always phones back and when I go for my 4 monthly check ups she always recognises me and has time for a chat they are the best ones for support. So keep strong ladies I know it is hard as I have had a few weeps on my own.

  • Thank you very much Nanny69 for sharing your endometrial cancer story. It will be inspirational to many here on the forum who are currently going through a similar experience. You certainly have been through a lot but it's nice to hear you have come out the other side and that you are making the most of life even though you are still suffering from a few issues.

I am glad that you have also had such a fabulous oncology nurse - how nice that she has a real personal touch and that she takes the time to chat to you and always recognises you.

    Best wishes,
