Does anyone have any tips for coping withchemo side effects?

Side effects vary from person to person and each drug regime.

I've just started cisplatin and vinorelbine and looking for personal experiences from you lovely people x

So far nausea and heartburn have probably been most persistent, doesn't sound much but it soon drags you down!!! Its also affecting my hearing. I'm probably getting away lightly compared to most but any tips on getting through this will be gratefully received.

Best regards

  • Hi Varmint,

Talk to your named nurse asap, the rest of your care team and your GP.

I stupidly put up with lousy side effects because I thought they were inevitable. Anti-nausea, anti-diarrhea, anti-anxiety and  pain relief medications plus laxatives all helped eventually! So did mild exercise and more sleep than I ever imagined I might need.

Eating little and often, plus keeping hydrated all helped too.

    Best wishes

  • Hi there

One thing - make sure you tell your team about the hearing problems as its a side effect of Cistplatin that they need to be aware of. You may need to change to Carboplatin .
My hubby used acupressure bands we bought from the chemist to help with the nausea - he thinks it may have been a psychological effect but anything is worth a try.

    Good luck and best wishes

  • Hi thank you for the advice, I found my daughters anti sickness bands she had for morning sickness and popped them on, had my antisickness meds changed - just had second session so yet to see if they work. Did tell oncologist about hearing but my treatment hasn't changed, waiting to see if same happens again!
