Stage 4 Breast Cancer

Hi everyone ! I hope you are feeling some joy today. Sending you positives vibes from me
Do any of you have stage 4 breast cancer or a family a member ? Do you mind sharing your experience and what you do to cope and get through the day. My mom has stage 4 cancer , advanced to liver and to lymp node behind trachea. She just started chemo in tablet form and she is getting spots on her arm and face . Sadly the excellent treatment we get here is not free in SA.
Any advise to support her or sharing your story experience will help me and her a lot.
Thank you

  • Hi I am sorry to hear about your mum.I am only 42 but diagnosed with breast cancer spread in my lungs in May 2019 and apparwntly in my liver.Apparently because the ultrasound i had in June for liver was clear and i dont have any issues.First was a real shock and wasn't very positive.I am having a weekly IV Paclitaxel chemotherapy. The only side effects are a red skin on my face and skin rash on my hands.I went to see my GP and then dermatologist in the hospital and they prescribed me with good creams. So I just advice you to speak to the doctor regarding the spots.I am still positive because I had 2 scans and they showing all tumours shrinking.Otherwise I am feeling ok and eating healthy.I am enjoying every day and I am trying to stay positive.I have read many stories people living with stage 4 cancer many years and beating the odds.Dont believe everything and every statistics.Everybody is different. I Hope it helped a little bit.

    Take care

  • Hi Denisa,

Firstly thank you for sharing that with me and I am so glad things are looking up for you.

It honestly gives me hope for my mom and your words make me feel less depressed. My mom is 70.  My mom is on Capecitabine daily for 4 weeks then off one week for life apparently. She does not have medical insurance and her medical plan only givers hospitals visits. If I may ask what name of cream so that I could possibly buy here and post to South Africa. Please also keep me up to date on how you are doing .i am happy to be a listening ear if you need.

  • Hello and I am glad I helped you a bit.for face I am using Epimax cream and for hands a steroid cream but this one is only for prescription it's called Mometasone.

Feel free ask any questions. Its hard but don't forget your mum to eat healthy lots of veg and fruits and keep drinking lots.I am going to have a break from chemo soon so I can spend some good time with my mum who is coming over from Europe.

If you also visit Mcmillans website there are lots of ladies who have been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and still here few years on

So we need to stay positive.

    Take care

    Denisa

  • Hello,

I can see this was posted in November 19' but I have been searching and searching for someone in the same boat as me/my mum. I was told on Wednesday with my mum, her breast cancer has come back after three years and it's stage 4 in her liver and lungs. I don't know what to do... they didn't give us much hope and we left feeling very in the dark. They said they were coming up with a treatment place to help give her 1-2 years.

do you have any words of advice? Anything I should be asking the oncologist?

I send you al my love and hope from Jersey Channel Islands x

  • Hello i was thinking to reply to you to give you some positive words from my experience.I am having weekly Paclitaxel since August and the mets from my liver and kidney has gone and the lump in my breast cant feel it anymore also my lung mets shrink considerably.Just had my results 2 weeks ago.I have never askes for prognosis.Far as I know this prognosis is based only on stattistics. Can she have any kind of chemo?

I am planning to be here till 65.I must be optimistic.

You can always get a second opinion. They should give her a some kind of treatment. So dont give up hope.

If you want to ask anything just text me here if I can I help you.

    Denise

  • Hello Denise,

wow how lovely of you to reply to me!

I am so happy to hear your treatments is working and everything is coming back positive. It's so warming to see and hear the flip of the word 'terminal' and there is some light at the end of this long tunnel.

I am going to the oncologist on Wednesday and need to make note of some questions to ask, do you have any words of wisdom or things I should know?

what is the point if you aren't positive and optimistic, you are certainly are that!

thank you for your support and kind words x

  • Hello Rosieblue,

I would ask them about treatment options and side effects. When I was diagnosed I was offered an immunotherapy trial but my condition was so bad I couldnt wait for more testing just wanted any treatment. So maybe you can ask if your mum is eligible for any trials. If you are in doubt with the oncologist please ask for a second opinion.I had bad experience after seeing 3 different oncologist with bad attitude finally got a nice oncologist who doesnt have "graveyard attitude".

And another advice please dont do "Dr.Google" too much. The numbers or informations are old and only "numbers".Everybody is different.Even chemo everybody reacts differently. For me I havent been sick once or didnt have stomach issues since I started last year. The only isaues I have are my nails and a bit of anxiety otherwise is all ok.

    I hope i helped a little bit.
