DCIS

I was diagnosed with DCIS about 4 weeks ago now and told that all I would need is radiotherapy. I have had bruising from 3 separate biopsies, as there 3 areas with micro calcifications and due to the bruising and blood clot, surgery(wide area excision) will be in approximately a months time. Has anyone else just had the DCIS removed with no further action? Also worried that the other two areas have abnormal cells but those areas will be left alone with the routine annual follow up.

    Welcome to the forum.

Your treatment depends on where your cancer is, how big it is, whether it has spread anywhere else in your body, and your general health. A team of doctors and other professionals decide on the best treatment and care for you. From your post you mention that you're due to have surgery in about a month from now and that you'll then go on to have radiotherapy after this.

You can find more information about DCIS including treatment on our website here which may be of interest. It's understandable that you may be feeling worried and I wonder if it might help you to have a chat with one of our nurses. I'm sure that they will be able to answer some of your questions and offer some reassurance. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that the after effects of your biopsies settles soon and that your surgery goes smoothly. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi, I was diagnosed with grade 3 DCIS in both breast with no invasion. I has 2 WLE in both boobs plus another reexcision on one as they didn’t get it all out first time.

Then almost 3 months later I had 15 radiotherapy session to mop up any remaining cells and to hopefully stop it coming back.

I know a number of women who have had DCIS and it depends on what grade and whether there is microinvasion as to what treatment is offered. Generally in my circle it’s WLE, radiotherapy and then some are offered Tamoxifen. In my case tamoxifen was offered but I chose not to take it as it only provides a 2 % risk reduction in my case of it coming back.

Just to say I am fully recovered now after all that. Looking back the most impact was to me mentally, physically it was relatively minor looking back (in my case).

    hope this helps.
