Bras after lumpectomy for breast cancer

Hi, I'm new to this site and I'm just after some advice. Have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer (not sure of the stage yet) but have been told it's a grade one. Have been given the option of a wide local excision followed by radiotherapy or a masectomy. Have decided to go with the wide local excision. I already have a difference in breast size with the affected breast being the smaller breast, I've been told it will get even smaller after treatment. Can anyone advise on what sort of bra I should wear during and after the treatment please so I look even and also the best place to buy bras from? I wear an underwired 34D at the moment, thank you.

  • Hi peppy

I found the comfort bras from ASDA ideal, they really are the most comfortable bras, I even sleep with mine on. They are quiet cheep too at only £7/8.  I also use Primark reinforced vest tops when I want to go bra less @ £2.50.

  • I found the sports bras feom tesco were really good.  They come in packs of two, black and white and are mainly cotton which is great for comfort.

As far as having a difference in the size of your breasts in concerned, your bcn may be able to arrange for a prosthetic for you and a bra with an insert to hold the prosthestic in place. I understand that some hospitals can also arrange to have inserts stitched into normal bras.

If you do go down the prosthetic route, there are some really nice bras around so don’t be put off.

  • Thank you for your replies, really helpful. Sorry for the delay in responding but everything seems to have become a bit of a whirlwind with hospital appointments etc. Dealing with it all ok but still in shock mode I think. Helpful to have found this site though even if I am having a bit of difficulty navigating around it, I'm not the most technically minded person lol. Thanks again for advice xx
