Rising then falling CA125 levels

I was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in January 2016. After an op and 6 rounds of chemo I have been great until the beginning of this year (2019) when CA125 levels began rising. They have done relentlessly  throughout the year, reaching a high in September of 187. This month they are down to 115. Does anyone have any similar experience?

  • Hi Kath1961,

It would be best to discuss the potential reason for this with your doctor if you can - they will be best placed to advise specifically to you.

My reply here will ensure more people see your post, so if anyone has any similar experience then hopefully they'll be along here soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Thank you, Ben. I have discussed with my oncologist. Her explanation is the same as she and I discussed regarding delaying more treatment at this time. She told me that my body's immune system should be left to fight the recurrence, while I have no symptoms there is no benefit in going in dambusters with chemo. My immune system may be rallying at the moment and so has the upper hand. Yay me!!! Thank you, Cancer Research, for all you do ️

  • That is good to hear and I'm glad that your oncologist has explained things.

Thank you so much for your kind words!

    All the best,

    Ben

  • I to an having trouble with a rising ca125 level.

I had womb and ovarian cancer 7 1/2 yes ago. I had 5 rounds of chemo and got the all clear in the October 2012.

The chemo damaged my platelets down to between 50_58 over the last 7yrs. I also found out my sister and I both have the Barca 2 gene

Now this year my ca125 have gone from 25 now to over 70. I have had 2st scans and nothing is showing any where.

1 have another ct in 7weeks

    Very frustrating

    Sorry to unload

  • Please don't apologise, I've only just seen your response to this thread today. I hope you are well. My CA125 levels went as low as 67 but are now climbing again. I was tested yesterday and the result was 107. My body is still fighting as the rise is slow, but I am keeping a very close eye. In your face, cancer!

  • I had a laparotomy in Dec 2019 to remove my cancer (ovarian/fallopian-metastatic) I had carboplatin/paclitaxel for 6 months in 2020. After a tumour appeared on my liver at the end of 2020 I then started liposamol doxorubicin for another 6 months and by the summer of 2021 I was stable with CA125 of around 50. I was still stable in Oct 2021. I was elated but in Nov it had risen to 250 by Dec over 700. My review was postponed til Jan 2022, by which time it was over 1400 and another cancellation and appointment for Feb meant it was just over 3700. I was started on weekly chemo and shocked that after the first treatment it went up  by about another 400!! My highest levels previously have only been around 500! Can anyone explain why it has gone up?(I didn't ask the nurses-I was trying to play it cool!)
