Colonoscopy. Dreadful Prolonged Pain.

sent for colonoscopy as a precaution. Did all correct prep. Was prepared for some discomfort but had to endure excruciating pain as doctor continually probed attempting to examine sigmoid colon. I’m fairly stoic but I was screaming with pain, the doctor carried on regardless in repeated attempts. Eventually after about half an hour &  many attempts he gave up.  The pain was comparable to childbirth except it did not go on for so long. I was terribly upset - traumatised is not too strong a word - &  thinking this was somehow my fault, but the nurse reassured me it was not, & of course she was right.   What on earth possessed this so- called doctor to persist as he did  unless sheer bull-headedness

On the copy of the report to my GP there is a heading “comfort score”. The doctor left this blank. Minus 50 would be my assessment.

  • Sorry to hear you had a horror experience regarding this procedure .

My dad had the same procedure 4 months ago on a Sunday in a hospital in London.  The idiot was checking test cricket results on his mobile in the room and he did not even put my dad in a gown , then he put the probe so forcefully down my dads throat  , my dad was told he had a tumour but he still carried on causing my dad huge pain . My dad died in agony 2 weeks ago . This *** was a disgrace , I'm not sure he was even medically trained , maybe he purchased his stripes on Ebay. Anger is an understatement regarding this individual.

  • My heart goes out to you as I've had the same experience twice, no sedation, excruciating pain where it left me shaking so much I couldn't lie stil.  More problems this year we'll send you for a colonoscopy, I refused point blank and then received an appointment for an MRI scan, this involved a needle in my arm a compassionate radiographer and kindness all round.  In this day and age with technology at its highest its scandalous that patients are still being subjected to such pain.  I hope all goes better for you in the future.  Hugs your way, Carol

  • I am so sorry for your terrible loss, & the unnecessary suffering your father was put through. You do hear stories about unqualified doctors infiltrating the system but on the other hand I’m sure some are just incompetent. They ought to be sued but there would probably be a closing of ranks.

  • Thank you for sharing your story with me & your very kind wishes.   I had gas & air but like you I was shaking so much with the pain I couldn’t concentrate on breathing it in.  The doctor kept telling me to bend my legs but they instinctively went rigid each time with the pain.  I’m glad I didn’t have sedation as I wonder if he would have gone on poking away regardless. As it is I hope he didn’t cause more damage

There was a form I had to sign at hospital to say that the procedure & the alternatives had been explained to me. I don’t remember any alternatives being offered. But following these aborted attempts I am now waiting for an appointment for a scan.

Wishing you all the best & thank you again

  • Thank you for your kind words .

Yes sued or struck off i agree , something needs to be done and quickly as no person deserves such poir treatment .

I hope you get better soon .
