7 weeks ago I had a biopsy after going to the breast clinic with nipple discharge and had a 7 day wait for it to be confirmed as ductal carcinoma in situ. Posted to this forum and had no responses. Thought it would be helpful but not so much. I ended up replying to someone elses post who seemed to be going through similar and we did get a discussion going where I advised her not to leave her concerns and get herself checked out. I had 5 weeks to wait which has been one of the longest of my life to get to my operation day. It was a nightmare wait and I obviously had moments on my own when it hit me and sleepless nights of fear and at times it felt so lonely. I have lovely friends and family around me and tried to keep busy and during the day I was mainly fine. It was worst at night. The week before my op I had a panic moment when I came up with crops of sore spots under my armpits for which I took a 5 day course of antibiotics and thankfully they went down enough. I had panicked through that time about getting any bugs which might delay things. Finally wait over, I had my op on Monday this week and am recovering in hospital. I've had mastectomy with shoulder muscle a part reconstruction and it seems to be going okay so far and will have further work done but will have to wait 7 to 10 days to know if my cancer has spread. Obviously an anxious wait. I will be going home tomorrow or Friday but previous experience shows me from ops I have had that houses are not as practical as hospital. My main issue at the moment is with regard to the 3 drains I have to carry round with me for the next 3 to 4 weeks and wonder if anyone knows of any good sites to get drain dollies to help with this. The Hospital don't have any on my ward. When I had a hip replacement I realised too late that I had got so used to having no headboard for my bed that I didn't reckon on banging my head a few times on the wall trying to get into bed - not helpful when you are already in agony. Still didn't get one after, no learning curve there then!! Obviously wasnt expecting this but I have now ordered one which will be here hopefully in 7 days so will have to take care getting in bed in the meantime.. Does anyone have any useful hints or tips or experiences which they might want to share which would help me to be much more comfortable than my previous op in my recovery. I am fairly practical but sometimes have random moments where I haven't thought ahead and best laid plans of mice and men etc. I have a picker upper. My sister is lending me her back support. May get a cheese shape raiser. Mobile phone to hand. Is there anything else that would help me on top of the dolly bags. Thanks.
