Laryngectomy post radiotherapy for cancer of larynx

Hi

my husband had chemoradiotherapy for laryngeal cancer 11 months ago. Since then it’s come back twice and he’s had laser surgery recently to remove the rumour but they’re not sure they’ve got it all. So the advice is total Laryngectomy but he wants to wait and see if it comes back first as he can’t face the idea of more treatment. We know waiting increases the risk of spreading and/or a more complicated surgery. Because of the radiotherapy last year we know a Laryngectomy isn’t straightforward and his swallowing isn’t good at the moment anyway - soft foods only. Has anyone had Laryngectomy after radiotherapy and can you give info on what to expect?

thanks

  • Hi Kate12358,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about your husband. Have a look here if you haven't already - there is some information about treatment for laryngeal cancer including surgery.

It would always be best to discuss what's involved in surgery with your husband's consultant, so that you're informed as to the options. If you would like to discuss anything with our nurses, you can reach them on 0808 800 4040 - Monday-Friday, 9-5.

Otherwise, if anyone has any similar experience then hopefully they'll be along here soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
