Ileostomy reversal anxiety

Hi I  am soon to have stoma reversal after being diagnosed in Dec 18, I am anxious after reading all the problems others have encountered.  I am 38 and have 2 children that I take to school and am worried about the urgency and diahorria, anyone have any advice on how best to manage bowel habits after.

  • Hi Vicki14

There is some information written by a UK organisation called Bladder and Bowel which has some information on having an ileostomy reversal.  The Bowel Cancer charity Bowel Cancer UK also has some information.  Have a look here and here.

The NHS have produced some information about having a reversal of an ileostomy.  Have a look at the information here.

On the whole the procedure tends to be much more straight forward then having an ileostomy in the first place but patients can be troubled by diarrhoea in the first few weeks until the bowel has settled down.Probably the best person to talk to is your surgeon or nurse specialist. Hopefully they will be able to give you  more information about how best to manage things.

If you'd like to speak to one of our team of nurses please do give them a call. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

    Best wishes for your surgery.
