PICC line bleeding

Hello all

I was fitted with a PICC line 16 days ago, just prior to having my first chemotherapy. 5 days after installing the line my arm was very red and hot and I got in touch with the Cancer team who advised me to come in and get it checked. They originally thought it was cellulitis from a bug bite however had to rule out a clot so sent me for an ultrasound. As it turns out, I had already developed a clot around the picc line! Obviously as they had identified a clot I've been put on clexane blood thinning injections twice a day for atleast the next 6 months, and they did a lineogram today to check if it's viable to continue using the line which it is. But every day the entry site of the picc bleeds like mad. I know it's normal for there to be a bit of bleeding when you first get it done but mine is constantly bruised and fresh blood everytime it's changed. This leads to a horrible looking mess under my dressing. They've said to keep an eye on it but that it's probably just because I'm on blood thinners.

Anyone else having issues with their line?

At first I thought it was a great idea to get the line put in but I'm already starting to regret it! Will the bruising and bleeding get better?

  • Hi Ross2991,

I'm sorry to read about the issues you've been having with your line, it sounds uncomfortable.

While I can't advise in terms of answers to your questions, my reply here will boost your post so more people will see it and if anyone has similar experience then hopefully they'll be along soon.

Do keep monitoring it and if you're concerned raise it with your doctor again. Do make sure you ask them too about if and when the bruising and bleeding will get better.

I hope you get some relief from it soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
