Tongue Cancer - scar tissue

Hi there

I’m new to the forum, but have read lots of posts which have been really useful and informative.

I had a Partial Glossectomy on the right side of my tongue (no graft needed) and a neck dissection on the right side in April 2019.

Following this I’ve not needed any more treatment and am cancer free which is brilliant.

I had my third six weekly check up last week and my consultant mentioned that the scar tissue on my tongue has a lump. He stressed it is not cancer but if it gets bigger it will need to be removed. I had a photo taken whilst at the hospital so he can compare it at my next check up. (04/09/19)

The past few days the lump feels a bit bigger and has got more tingly than usual. Has anyone else experienced this/had their scar tissue removed?

Thanks

Vanessa

  • Hi Vanessa

Sorry but my situation is a wee bit different, hopefully someone in same situtaion will read and come along to answer for you.

I had a partial glossectomy and other areas removed also neck dissection on right side in March19. I discovered lumps in floor of mouth in June Locum gp seems to think bone pieces??? I so hope he was correct. Will find out more at hospital next week.

One thing I do know is that scar tissue can develop benign lumps. My husband had this following major surgery. So perhaps that will help put your mind at rest a bit till your next appt.

    Best wishes. xx

  • Hi

Thank you for your reply, I’ll keep an eye on it and contact my MacMillan Nurse Monday.

Sorry to hear of your situation. Fingers crossed for you.

    Xx

  • Just an update in case anyone else has this in the future.

My doctor has said the scar tissue needs to be removed (Just like when I had a tongue biopsy) It’s causing discomfort, pain and is rubbing on a sharp bit of my tooth.

I will then have a mouth guard given to me that day so I can use it at night time to stop my tongue rubbing at night.

Fingers crosses this will keep the scar tissue from getting bigger again.

  • Hi there I had a partial glossectomy five years ago with no other treatment necessary. I injured my tongue about 7 months ago on the scar tissue but I have now been left with a really rough sore patch on the scar! I'm hoping it's nothing horrible again but I had a checkup in January and the consultant didn't seem to think it was anything nasty and had no concerns but it's still there and I'm just really worried aboutIt. Could it just be injured scar tissue that's causing the pain ???
