Cold cap success

Retained probably 90% of my hair after 6 high dose chemo (taxotere, carboplatin and epirubicin) see picture below.

Kept cap held tight to my scalp with my hands throughout (long days but worth it to keep my hair and have managed to keep my diagnosis private because I didn't lose hair)

Hair continued to grow throughout (hence the roots, didn't have hair cut or coloured during chemo)

Took strong painkillers half an hour before as very painful, and took hot water bottles and blankets.

First 20 minutes agonising for me, but again, I felt the pain was worth it, and after 20 mins you are numb. Short term pain for long term benefit, that's how I got through it. [[{"fid":"106731","view_mode":"default","fields":{},"type":"media","field_deltas":{"1":{}},"attributes":{"class":"media-element file-default","data-delta":"1"}}]]

Good luck if you're giving the cold cap a go. I would definately say it's worth it.

  • Thank you for sharing. I'm giving it a try. First round was ok and I also took strong painkillers a good half hour before hand, it definitely worked and I found it bearable. Very  mild discomfort for the initial 15 minutes, I just focused on something else. Hope it stays feeling like that

I  have been feeling  concerned for when I swap from Epirubicin to Carboplatin and paxatacel further down the line.

Great to know it worked for you. Your post will inspire me to keep going.

  • Hi D1968......My daughter focussed on the cup of coffee at the end!!!!  We also played  endless games of Scrabble on the Ipad. Not sure if you're allowed to have anyone with you at the moment though.

She found she went through a spell where she went very cold after about half and hour and wanted to sleep before she started to warm up again.

Don't forget to slap loads of conditioner on your hair (she did it herself) before the cap goes on. It stops the cap freezing to your hair and helps to stop pulling the hair out when you take it off. She only used to wash her hair about once a week and would leave it as long as she could between washes.

I'm sorry I can't help you with the change of drugs but my daughter had Paclitaxel and was ok.

Good luck with your treatment and let us know how it all goes....sending hugs.  Love Irene xxx

  • Thank you and I will do.
