Radiotherapy for tongue cancer causing swelling

I am presently having radiotherapy for tongue cancer, the usual swelling has taken effect but is it normal for lymph nodes to swell up?

  • Hi Nicki-D

Radiotherapy can cause lots of different side effects and I'm sorry to hear that this time you've experienced some additional swelling. It's certainly worth giving your clinical nurse specialist a quick call to check this if your concerned. Alternatively remember to mention it next time that you go for treatment.

If you'd like to chat to one of our nurses you can call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm).

  • Hi Nicki

i don’t know the answer to your question, but wanted to say I’m in the same boat at the moment, having radiotherapy for tongue cancer. I’ve completed 10/30 so far. Side effects not too bad so far, tongue just feels slightly burnt, like I’ve drunk hot coffee. I know it gets worse from here.

How many treatments have you had? Did you have surgery first?

    Edited for typo

  • Yes I had surgery on the 4th June 2019, my recovery went really well however it’s all gone a bit *** up this week I’m 12 treatments in out of 30 and this week (Monday 29th July 2019 to be precise) my lymph gland on opposite side has swelled up , it’s all come around the same time that the other radiotherapy side effects began to kick my *** but the doctor is referring me for ultrasound and aspiration of the lymph gland which I’m absolutely terrified as prior to Radiotherapy everything was going really well. Has anyone else had this?

  • Are you having RT to the lymph glands in your neck as well?

I had a few enlarged lymph nodes on my scans but the neck dissection showed they were all benign. They can swell up when your body is fighting something rather than being sinister. Best to be safe though, so hopefully your doctor can put your mind at rest.
