Problems after lumpectomy

Hi all,

I had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy 3 weeks ago...and for the first ten days had no problems. I then started having severe nerve pain at the back of my armpit and now my breast is aching and swollen with orange peel appearance on the one side (underside of where lumpectomy was done)...has anyone else had similar problems? My follow up appointment is next Wednesday....

  • Hello and thanks for your post

Although you posted in the nurses' topic area, it seems that you wanted other forum users who have been through what you are going through  to get in touch. I hope other forum members do share their experiences with you.

Following breast surgery these symptoms happen because the nerves in the chest area or armpit are cut or injured during surgery. Symptoms usually improve with time but, in some women, they may take months to get better. There are different ways of controlling this type of pain so do discuss this with your specialist team.If you have a breast care nurse then perhaps they can provide you with further information.

A physiotherapist can give you advice about arm exercises to help improve your movement.

I do hope that it improve for you soon. Please get back to us if you have any other questions. If you would like to telephone  the number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Hi Saft. Had same op as you, 8 weeks ago. I can't say I was in pain but was uncomfortable. Had the orange peel thing you describe, though I called it looking a bit like a cauliflower, surface wise. Had funny 'stabbing'pains which my nurse, and nurse on here, explained as nerves recovering from the invasion of the surgery. My boob has gradually settled down but it has taken the full 8 weeks they predicted. Found armpit to be worse than the lumoectomy incision. Hope this helps. Think if by swollen, you mean really swollen best give your nurse a ring. X

  • Hiya Vplum, thank you so much for replying, you’ve put my mind at rest knowing that this is a complication that can happen - I was fine for the first ten days, so was doing really good, then I guess as things start to heal things can all change...funnily enough I’ve had no issues with the incisions. The nerve pain was terrible for about 3 days but has calmed down a lot. It doesn’t help that I have very large boobs either.

I’m wishing you all the best with your ongoing treatment etc xxx
