PICC Line

Hi

I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and had my PICC line inserted about 2-3 weeks ago.  Judging from the comments on here about waterproof covers for PICC lines, it doesn't seem like there's been much improvement.  The hospital first directed me to check with my GP surgery as they said that most surgeries were supposed to supply these on prescription - mine doesn't!  My next port of call was Boots (it was a reasonably large store as well), who said they couldn't help me either.  I then did manage to order a "Limbo" from Amazon (about £16.00) which, to be honest, I don't begrudge paying for.  The problem is trying to get it on/off!  This is most definitely a two handed job, which of course if you've got a PICC line in makes that arm already at a disadvantage.  Currently, I am having to rely on someone else being able to put it on/take it off for me.  However if anyone has any suggestions about how to make this job any easier I would be most grateful for any input!

  • Hi there,

I've tried one of the cheaper PICC Line covers and, like you, I find them a pain to use. Personally, I'm going to try one of these castcovers.co.uk/.../

I know they are more expensive, but if they do the trick, it'll be worth it. I'm not sure how easy they are to use, but knowing our friends across the pond, they won't be too difficult. ;)

One thing I found out about my current PICC Line cover, is to be patient when fitting it. Don't try to put it on or take it off in one go; ease it up and down your arm a bit at a time - like putting on a sock.

If I get my American cover before you get sorted, I'll let you know what its like. :)

    All the best. x
