Non small cell lung cancer

Back in 2017 after few issues with brething etc managed to get my husband to have a can, which revealed non small cell lung cancer - the tumour was on the outside of the lung by his shoulder blade so non terminable but not operable.  he has always been positive and has his christian beliefs.  At the time we did not know that it was 3.7 and quite large.  Chemo and radiotherapy did reduce it and syop it and for 6 months all was fine.  He then got a "chect infection" and although he had had his usual scan it was not reviewed for 3 weeks!! Oncologist said the tumour was growing agin and that he was not sure whether there was inflammation in the lungs or small nodules but would start immunotherapy.  This seemed to go well for around 8 months with no side affects.  Then he bagan to have triuble breathing to the extent he could not climb the stairs.  After a scan the nodules have grown so immuno has not worked.  There is just nothing I can do to ease his pain and anything I say am told "I am not his nurse".  He has been really bad this weekend and all the coughing to bring up the mucus has given him really bad rib pain making it harder even to get in a good position to sleep.  When I asked about pallative care which is the treatment they have said he is on, was told that that doesn't mean anything just it being the name of the treatment. Feel at a loss.

  • Hi Terriho, I know what you are coping with as my husband has lung cancer, stage 4 and incurable since 2017, so I've been down the same road.  It's very upsetting because we are their nurse, they just feel out of control, don't want to discuss it and basically are being men!!  So take each day as it comes, let him make his own decisions, he's a grown man, walk away if he starts on you, he can argue with himself!  Meet friends for coffee, go out and have some life as you still need me time to cope.  Hop onto my page, there are a few of us who chat daily, support each other, say what's on our minds and share our moans.  Carol

  • HI so sorry i iunderstand what your husband is going through and you also  i was diagnosed in 2017 also with lung and liver cancer. treatment not working, breathing problems since friday.next step is targeted therapywith nivolumab. .Everything is frightening but have faith and keep your spirits up.talking can help at times

  • Thank you, nice to hear others going through the same thing.  He should start new chemo treatment next week but got taken into hospital Friday.  Oncologist hadn't said anything or checked but GP found oxygen levels exceedingly low.  Antibiotics for chest infection sometime ago had not worked so has infection in left lung & fluid build up in right.  No wonder he could not breathe.  Being sorted now.
