Post Op mastectomy and reconstruction

Hi i had my op 17 days ago and only had drain remove 3 days ago. My surgeon saved my nipple but it has been very red now  the nipple its just very red. My surgeon said the top skin of it will probably fall off. I still have the Pico dressing with battery pack and continue to take Flucloxacill 500mg 4 times a day.

Is it natural to feel real fatigue, sick, breast feels tight, uncomfortable and less movement? Is there any chance this is due to infection?

Be grateful if anybody could help

Thanks in advance x

  • Hi Jolamine

    Hi Angela,

I'm glad to hear that your pains have lessened. Don't be afraid to phone your breast care nurse if you are unsure about anything - that's what they're there for.

No wonder you couldn't manage the 2 year old the other day. They can be so quick at that stage.

I hope that you can enjoy this weekend better than last.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine i have my pico dressing off as not doing much. Now i have a smaller dressing and a big square plaster on it. The nipple is nearly off and abit more dead skin. Surgeon told me  could  take a month+so have to go every week. At least i know whats happening now.

    How are you keeping yourself?

    Take care God bless

    Hi Angela,

It sounds as if your breast is healing better at last. I didn't preserve my nipples, as I had a full double mastectomy and unfortunately, I wasn't a candidate for reconstruction.

Another month seems a long time to wait and, it must be quite tying having to go back every week. Still, so long as it will all be ok at the end, this is the important thing.

I am keeping fine thanks. Still got a lot of pain in all my joints and still tired, but otherwise ok.

Hope that your breast heals up soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Sorry to hear you still have alot of pain in your joints  and that your still tired. You have gone through so much having to have a double mastectamony. I hope your able to do something to relax  at the weekend.

I stretched putting stuff in my wardrobe and have made my arm neck and back sore. I just feel so weak with no energy. I have problems anyhow because of my fibromyalgia but, its even worse at the moment as i feel totally useless. I know in time things will improve just wish it was sooner rather than later but, need to be patient.

It's abit of a pain having to go to hospital every week but its 30  mins away tops so not that bad. I'm grateful at the same time that they are taking such great care of me.

I will be having a quiet weekend as normal lol

    Love ang hugs

    Hi Angela,

Have you been told what type of breast cancer you have and what grade it is? You have probably been told whether or not it is hormone receptive. If this is the case, have you discussed any further treatment after your nipple heals up? You are fortunate that your hospital is fairly close at hand, especially when you are having to go there so frequently. Still, I'm glad to hear that they are taking such good care of you and, I am sure that this will all be worth it in the end.

I'm fine really. I had to have both knees replaced a few years ago, as they had got really bad and, I fear that it will shortly be the turn of my hips. It's hard to say whether or not this would have happened anyway, or if it was due to treatment.

I am sorry to hear that you have strained yourself putting stuff in your wardrobe. This is one thing that you have to accept and that is that you are pretty uselessat the moment, but don't feel bad about it, just make the most of it while you can - no heavy lifting and no stretching. It's just not worth the risk. Despite taking it easy, I ended up with Lymphoedema in both arms and, I'm stuck with this for the rest of my days. I attend a Lymphoedema clinic every 12 weeks for manual lymphatic drainage. After that they bandage my arms in layers of compression bandage. They do this twice a week for 2 weeks and, I look like the Michelin Man for this period. In between, I wear an elastic bandage from my fingertips to my shoulders. Most people find that this just affects one side, but I have been unfortunate enough to have it on both sides.

We are going away for a few days next week, so this weekend will see me packing. I hope that you manage to have the nice quiet weekend that you've planned.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

I'm so sorry to hear about you having lymphoedemia in both arms and what you have to go through due to it.. Then to have to get your knees done and probably your hips  your getting it rough.  I hope you have a lovely few days away to relax.

My cancer was non invasive DCIS . It was high grade so they had to do the mastectomy as they have no way as yet to say if it would have spread or not. Although if was left could spread throughout and be fatal.  They are hoping.in years to come they can do a test2discover which ones will spread. So i was lucky my routine mammogram found it.

I hope the weather improves for you going away and that you have a lovely time.

    Best wishes

    Hi Angela,

I suppose that this is the purpose of the routine mammograms and, although you might not think so just now, it is just as well to catch it as early as you can. Here's hoping that your mastectomy will prevent any spread and prevent it from being fatal. It's good news that it is non-invasive.

I get by with my additional operations and side-effects, as they've just become part of my life now - a limiting life and not the one that I had planned for my retirement, but One that I can still cope with and, one that makes me feel very fortunate to still be here 10 years down the line from diagnosis.

We're really looking forward to a few days away. I don't even care too much if it rains, as there is a swimming pool in the hotel.

    Enjoy your quiet weekend.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • HI Jolamine

That sounds lovely away staying in a hotel and able to go for a swim when you want. Don't think i'd worry about the rain either if i was you.

I'm very thankful for my rountine mammogram as it probably may have saved my life so its great. I consider myself a very lucky  person to say the least.

You have the right attitude as i believe if we are negative it eats up the enjoyment of our lives. Yes we can all be negative sometimes but that can be due to circumstances at the  time.

Enjoy your weekend and your time away.

    Best Wishes

    Hi Angela,

The one thing that we all need to deal with cancer is a positive attitude. It's not always easy to find, but it's worth holding on to if you do.

I cannot walk far which makes it difficult to exercise. Swimming is non-weight bearing, so I really enjoy it.

It looks as if we might have a nice sunny weekend here despite the forecast. I hope that you are nowhere near the flooding.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
