Radiotherapy

hi everyone I’m due to start my radiotherapy and not sure what to expect ! Do we feel any burning? Do they give us cream to use? I have a Gleason score of 7 and the cancer is supposed to be contained within the prostrate. As far as I know I’m having four weeks of radiotherapy, Iv been taking hormone tablets for 4 months and my psa has dropped from 10.4 to 2.6 after three months will be having another psa before radiotherapy starts. Iv been told it’s very tiring ?

  • Hi you need to talk to [@woodworm]‍ he's been through it hopefully he'll pop over,

    Billy

  • That would be good, someone who has been through the same situation would be great,

  • Sorry I put wrong name down.

  • Hi,

Sorry to read about your prostate cancer

With regards to the radiation, You dont feel a thing. They do recomend special soap and it can get very tiring towards the end of the treatment. The soap is especially recomended for people with sensitive skin. I never had a problem with this at all. As my psa was 70 I had 7 1/2 weeks of radiotherapy and I was told if I felt tired, to go and have a lie down. After a short while I was okay again. The other thing is the treatment can give you the runs. I bouught some Immodium Instants and they worked fine.

It may seem a long time 4 weeks but trust me it will fly by. I am aware that some treatment centres are reducing the 37 radiotherapy sessions i had to about 4 weeks but are sometime giving increased dosage per visit,. It has been found to often give less side effects while being just as effective. 7 1/2 weeks was a long time and the r/t dept became a second home to me for a while.

I had hormone injections for two years and had far more side effects from them than I ever did the radiotherapy. Wishing you good result s and please let us know how you get on, Brian

  • Hi Brian, thank you for your response, I think it has settled my nerves considerably. This psa situation is rediculous, they are so different in every one and can be as high as a thousand, seems to be a bit of a strange test, pity there can not be a new test, but beyond me. Once again thank you for your reply and hope all is going well with yourself

  • Hi

They are looking at other methods as the psa is not always that accurate. You can have a high psa and not have cancer but you can sometimes have a low psa and yet have cancer. They are looking at variuos markers to see if they will give a more accurate picture but I think its a way off yet.

But there is so much research going on I feel confident things will change in the not to distant future.

The treatment I had, hormone therapy and radiotherapy brought my psa down from 70 to 3.18 before I started radio/t and about 12 weeks after finishing radio/t it was down to 0.01 so the treatment was very successful in my case.

Sure I had some side effects frome the hormone injections but I consider it a price worth paying.

    Best wishes, Brian

  • Thanks once again Brian, very interesting let’s hope a new test is found soon, and nice to see what your psa was down to after radiotherapy. Good luck for the future

  • The gleason score is OK but sometimes they put it down wrong there was someone on with gleason 9 and it was still only in prostate, hope your treatment goes well.

    Billy

P.s my psa was 1581 gleason 8 stage 4 that was three years ago. It's not curable.

  • Yeah all seems a bit strange, hopefully mine is right and they can do what they say they can but all a shot in the dark, but hopefully things might get better as there doing clinical trials all the time.
