Throat Cancer in cartilage of Epiglottis

Diagnosis given and MDT appointment same day, stage is T3, radiotherapy will not work as it does not get into the cartilage and would only give 40% chance of cure, so my only option is surgery.    If they have to remove too much I will be on permanent feeding tubes and possible voice box removal but this is worse case scenario.  Speech therapist has to teach me how to swallow properly as this will likely cause aspiration of the lungs and I will get multiple chest infections.  Pretty scary stuff.  Possible radiotherapy after the op has healed to ensure all is gone but have to take it one day at a time.

Has anyone else got experience of cancer in this area.  I have read some of the blogs on radiotherapy but was not prepared for this.

Surgery is planned for next Thursday 23rd May.

  • Hi Mo, I've just seen your post.I had throat cancer 14 yrs ago on my tonsil ,had radical surgery and radiotherapy.I recovered well and went back to work .I was 60 at the time worked till I was 72 when I got cancer of the Epiglottis, that was 2. 1/2 yrs ago I Was told all that you have been told.I was being feed by tube and told I wouldn't be able to eat again .The speech therapist gave me exercises to do and we had swallow tests .They said could try to eat again starting on soft food ,also warned could get infections but as I was fit give it ago .I can tell you i am eating again you find out what you can and can't. I cook peppers courgettes cherry tomatoes onions carrots in olive oil roast them in oven with salmon fillet . I have pasta , soups , trifle, ice cream so I'm not doing bad am I! Plus breakfast porridge and bananas coffee .

I have little saliva from my 1st op due to the radiation so it makes it harder too swallow .So if I can do it you can ! Just don't give up and keep trying . Wishing you well for the future .Peter .

  • Hello Peter

Thanks for your reply, have not been on this site for quite a while but had an email notification.  This was last year,   Cutting a long story short i had a further biopsy in the middle of lock down as they thought there was a new growth but no sign of cancer returned to Epiglottis.  However in the meantime i had a large tumour on my lip which I had radiotherapy for in the middle of lock down and now have another SCC on my cheek and am awaiting surgery for wide local incision to remove this one so been round the block a bit in te last 18 months.   I have quite a long post on Mcmillan site called Here we go round the Mulberry bush.  Basically I was given immunosuppressants to treat Crohns disease and they agreed that this has probably caused the cancers that I have had.  Not sure this will end it but try to remain upbeat.  Hope you are doing OK, take care of yourself

    Mo x

  • Hi MO, just wanted to ask, how are you doing? How are e treatments and are you feeling better now?

  • Hi Mo,

I just sent uou a friends request as I found your posts about your throat issue. I too have Crohn's and it seems we also have had similar medical histories with the VIN3 and swallowing problem. We also randomly have the same birthday. I note you haven't posted very much recently - I hope you're doing okay. Please add me back so I can message you privately if that's okay!!
