Hi My Husband had a permanent chest drain. It required draining 2 x Week.  I asked the Nurses to show me the procedure so I could be responsible & it gave us some control over when being able to set off anywhere or if we got the opportunity to go away for a few days. He never had any problems with it - although as with anything in this situation it seemed daunting at first. Any questions just ask. All The Best
