esophageal cancer chemo regimen with decadron

I am writing because my sister is having great difficulty with her chemo.  She was diagnosed with stage 4 espohageal cancer and has completed two courses of chemo.  The third is supposed to begin tomorrow.  Her chemo has been including Decadron as a steroid.  It has an amazing positive impact at first, but then about 1 week after the steroids have been given, she is experiencing severe diarrhea, belly pains (waves), inability to sleep, and irritability.  After her first chemotherapy course, with these symptoms, they gave her infusions including more Decadron during week 2 to help her.  And after her second course, they did additional infusions during week one, but week two they offered northing.  I am afraid for her as when she is in these low points, she is si miserable, feels utterly out of control and helpless.  Have others experienced this?  Does this get better over time?  Or is this just part of the cycle every time you are given Decadron?  Experiences and advice are appreciated.

  • Hi

im so sorry your sister is having a difficult time through chemo.

I have just finished treatment for stomach cancer but as were at different stages the chemo regime I was on was called FLOT. After chemo I would always find that around day 3 side affects would kick in and diarrhoea would start around day 5 or 6, I was always given a supply of loperamide (Imodium) to take and told to call the nurses is I was going more than 4 times a day. I didn’t have stomach cramps but I have since surgery and I use buscopan for that.

With steroids I was on a different one and only for 3 days, I was told any longer and I would get more side affects from them so they would only use them as a last resort, but they do affect sleep terribly so can be best taken early in day and they also have an affect on your mood, combined with the effects of chemo it’s not great.

Sorry I don’t have any specific advice, I would suggest joining Macmillan forum for gullet oesophageal cancer and/or healthunlocked.com if you search for oesophageal patients association community, there are many people there if all different stages so someone may be able to give you specific advice.

I hope your sister has a good response to chemo, it’s not an easy journey but one worth taking.

    Best wishes

    louise
