Essential Thrombocythaemia

Hi all,

i am 73 years old and was was diagnosed with ET in November 2018. I enitially had a reading of around 1300, this was found in a normal blood test, first of all I was proscribed 1 aspirin, 1 20 milligram Omaprizol and 3 500mg Hydroxycarbamide, this brought my platlet count down to around 150 far too low. I am now still taking the aspirin and Omaprazel but only 1 500 Hydroxycarbomide which is giving me a platlet reading of 450. I have never had any symptoms or side effects. I have always been a very fit person and continue to be so, the only problem I have is because my kidneys are not 100% I have to drink 2 litres of water every day therefore I am continually going too the toilet, my urine is various shades of red, does anybody else have this problem? My GP told me This is a fairly normal occurrence.

  • Hello BrianO,

Welcome to our forum and thank you for sharing your story. It's great that you continue to be very fit and active and I hope you will get chatting soon on the forum to some of our other members who have been diagnosed with ET. We have information on our website on essential thrombocythaemia which you can find on this page.

It is reassuring that your GP mentioned that your current issues with your urine are a fairly normal occurrence and I hope you will come across others here for whom this has also been an issue. You can do a search on our forum for other members affected by ET by typing keywords such as 'essential thrombocythaemia' in our 'search forum' function which you can find in the top blue banner. I had a little look for you and found for example this thread by [@Patso]‍ which may be of interest to you which you can respond to if you wish. [@Abbey303]‍ commented just a few days ago on that thread and is also on aspirin and hydroxycarbamide like you.

I hope our members who have been affected by ET will come along soon and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
