Side effects of hydroxycarbamide

Hello everyone, this is my first time to post.

I was diagnosed with polycythaemia jak2 positive about 3 years ago. I am on hydroxycarbamide, and my bloods are being good at the moment, but in the past 5 months I keep getting, what are like mouth ulcers, but I don’t think they are they are slightly different. Has anyone else experienced this, and is it a side effect to the, medication ?

Thanks,

yvette

  • Hello Yvette and welcome to our forum,

It's good news that your bloods are good at the moment and the treatment seems to be working. It's a shame though that you are having to deal with mouth ulcers and I can imagine these can be rather inconvenient.

We have some information on hydroxycarbamide on this page and you can find more details about side effects that are linked to this drug here. It doesn't mention mouth ulcers in particular but a sore mouth and bleeding gums are amongs the listed side effects. Do talk to your doctor about it as I am sure they will have some options for you to help you deal with this. You could also ask your medical team whether this might be a side effect of your current treatment.

Our nurses are also available on this free number 0808 800 4040 if you want to have a chat to them about this. Their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I hope you will also hear from others here who have experienced similar side effects after taking hydroxycarbamide.

    Best wishes,
