Cold before tests and treatment - any advice?

I am due in clinic tomorrow be to seen for bloods and see the oncologist before chemotherapy on Thursday but I have had a rotten cold today. Any advice on what I do?

  • Hey there,

I'm sorry you have a cold on top of all this stress. I think there's something going around I've got something myself.

First of all have you got all the cold meds you need like lempsips, Vicks, even a bit of eucalyptus oil to sniff can help? Make a hot water bottle, snuggle down and try to get some sleep. You're not well so need to take care of the cold first tonight. See how you feel in the morning. If you're feeling so awful you can't move then call your oncologists secretary, you can do this by calling the number on your appointment letter and asking to speak to her. Ask if the oncologist can call you back, explain the situation and go from there. This happened to my dad two weeks ago and everyone was really supportive. As long as you call and tell them what's going on they will do their best to help you. Best wishes. Xxxxxxx

  • Thank you so much for you reply. I have taken medication stayed in bed slept etc etc. I am so wanting this chemo the last time I went I was meant to be half way but my oncologist added to more chemotherapy sessions on so this will be half way for me and I have been looking forward to hitting this stage. Sounds crazy lol.

I am just overly concerned for others in the hospital and wanted just some advice on what to do if been extremely lucky until this cold so I haven't really suffered any side effects etc and have felt quite well xx

  • Hi,

Well done for looking after yourself, taking the meds and sleeping. You've done all the right things.

It doesn't sound crazy! I totally understand what you mean, it's a milestone for you. If you're worried also about passing your cold on to others having treatment at the hospital I think you are so lovely. It's a good point too because it's a vulnerable time. I would definitely see how you feel tomorrow morning. Get up nice and slow, take your meds, give yourself a chance to come around and go from there. Whenever I make phone calls for my dad it seems like everyone tries hard to help and find a solution for us, I'm convinced if you speak up and say what you're telling us that they will help you. Xxxxxxx

  • I think half way feels like things are almost over even though there not Haha..  I am also due my half way scan on Friday so I am wanting that also so I know things are working. I think I'll just have to wait and see..

The hospital have been amazing so far I found another lump a few weeks ago and they had me on and scanned that day. Xx

  • You have such a lovely way about you! Half way is almost there really, I think so anyway!! Glass half full etc... See the positives.

I've had a nasty chesty sicky thing for over a week now and lots of people by me seem to have the same thing but it could be that you wake up feeling not too terrible. I hope so. I really do. You've got an important week really and you're probably a bit run down too. Just don't be afraid to ask for help and advice from the hospital tomorrow. It's not you fault you're poorly. Talk about bad timing! I was going to say I can't wait for the summer because all the germs will go but I forgot that I always get a summer cold too!! I am thinking of you. Fingers and toes crossed that your treatment plans can go ahead this week. Let us know how you get on! Bestest wishes and big hugs. Xxxxxx

  • Thank you so so much. I'll update you tomorrow..  I also hope all is ok with your dad and that you get better soon xx

  • Hi Lucy. How are you getting on?
