It never rains but it pours.......

So 11 days ago I had my mammoplasty, apart from the effects of the anaesthetic which I managed to dispose of in recovery (yuk) all went well. Without a word of a lie I have absolutely no pain or discomfort either from the breast or the node biopsy. Taking painkillers as standard though as advised by the doctor.

I blame myself for feeling slightly smug that it all went well and, yes, thankful that I am one of the lucky ones.

Might have known life thought otherwise LOL went I  yesterday for biopsy results and there was good news and not so good news. Good news was node biopsy clear so hurrah for that. On the downside was told  by surgeon  that when they operated, apart from the two areas they were removing, they also found in  the same area 4 additional small tumours.  Luckily as I am large breasted they were still able to do the mammoplasty with a good area of clear tissue. Again I though yay that's great but oh no, he has said that due to my dense breast tissue they now have no confidence in the previous accuracy of either the mammogram or ultrasound in determining any cancers that may still be lurking. So I've been give  the option of MRI scan which will show if anything still there, if that's ok then onwards to radiation. If there are other sites found then it has to be a mastectomy which was something I was prepared for in the future should cancer return but not mentally prepared just now to be honest.

I feel incredibly low, much the same as when my first operation was cancelled. I think what I've  learned from  this is nothing is set in stone and just when you think you have a handle on it, life throws a spanner in the works.

I think im also a bit resentful that my lovely new breast might be taken away after the wonderful work of the surgeon . Losing the breast itself was never a big issue for me initially so this is a bit of a mental glitch.

Don't relish MRI close confines and apparently the hole is quite small so i might have to be measured to see if I fit in LOL Ah well once again  we wait

  • Hello Anjeda.  I have been looking at your previous discussions and see that you are in excellent hands for information, discusson of worries etc.  I have not had breast cancer but just wanted to post a video of someone in the MRI scanner.  It looks fairly comfortable.  The rest of the information on this screen will hopefully be useful also.   The video of the scanner being used is some way down the screen.

    Best wishes.  Annie

  • Thanks Annie, yes I've seen this video I think my problem is they seem to think I might be too big to fit in it! My sister in law who is a size 10 said she just fitted with arms by her side, now I'm an 18 with a big upper arm. I suspect I may have to travel to where they have a wider one, I think they're 68cm as standard which isn't that wide LOL. Oh well I'll just have to wait and see. Meanwhile I'm going back to work which will make the wait more bearable

  • Oh dear, an extra headache for you.  Perhaps some other people will give their experiences.  Yes I remember seeing somewhere that a few NHS hospitals have extra size scanners so hope you will get this sorted soon.  Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.  Annie

  • Hi Anjeda

I had to have MRI scan on both breasts and I am a good size 16 with 38D boobs. It was absolutely fine, no discomfort and took about 25 minutes. Hopefully you will be ok too.

    Sending hugs.

  • Thanks Harvell it's just going to be a wait and see situation You can't thread a camel through the eye of a needle

  • Oh you made me laugh! I have a great visual going on now....

let us know how you get on.

    Hi Anjeda,

I am sorry to hear about your surgeon's findings during surgery and the need for you to have a mammogram. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 9 years I have also had a few false alarms, so I am no stranger to MRIs. At the time that these were being done, I was a size 22/24, with 44C breasts and, I still fitted in the normal sized MRI machine, so I don't think that you should have anything to worry about.

It is slightly claustrephobic, but if you take a nice loud CD to mask all the clunks and clicks, you should be fine. I took 'Bat out of Hell' by Meatloaf and found this excellent for this purpose. I'm not sure about how many hospitals offer music when having an MRI, but I was glad that mine was one of them - it might be worth asking.

I have also had a double mastectomy, so if you have any questions or concerns about that, I am always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine, well just attempted the mri and no good I'm afraid.  So it was face down on the bed with breasts dropped through this piece of kit on the bed and there was the problem. I lay with my arms out in front of me but the kit raises you up from the bed by quite a few inches so rather than the width which was my worry, the kit raises me up too much and it would not  go through.

No idea what's next, don't think there's any other way to do breast mri uness there's a machine that's a few inches larger. I'm just desperate to move on with my treatment or go back for mastectomy. Of course that doesn't solve the problem of what may be lurking in my left breast. Ah well I'll just have to wait

     if there

    Hi Anjeda,

I'm sorry to hear this. You must feel really dejected. I think that there is a larger MRI in some hospitals, so perhaps you'll be sent to one of these.

Did you ask about a larger machine when you were at the hospital? Never miss the opportunity to ask when you are there. You will often get an immediate answer to a question that can take weeks, if not months to answer otherwise.

Don't forget to let us know what happens next.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I asked the Radiographer what now and she said that's up to the consultant. They have a slightly larger machine there but the kit for the breasts is smaller which seems a bit weird and of no use to myself. I'll probably contact my cancer care nurse tomorrow as next appointment with consultant is a week away and that would have been for the results of the mri

I'll keep you posted and thanks x
