Dry Mouth Issues - throat cancer

Hello i am a 57 year old female called Roisin and i was diagnosed in August last year with a small tumour on the right hand side of my neck,i was told it was small and needed only 7 weeks of radiation,i knew nothing about throat cancer and it really took me by suprise that it was what i had although i was lucky it wasnt much worse because i first went to my gp with the problems in my throat in june 2017 when i was sent for a camera test down my throat,i was told back then that i had a small benign tumour at base of my throat but they said that wasnt causing my symptoms but my docs didnt bother following through with it and tbh it wasnt a great annoyance at that stage .

I was due to flie to New York on 1st July last year and the week before we were going i took a sore ear which i went to the docs with to get the all clear for flying ,it was a locum and she looked insind my ear and down my throant and asked had i never been sent to ent,she was very suprised i hant after reading the notes and said i had to go asap and got me emergency consultant for 2 days timr,he knew as soon as he looked down my throat i had a problem and said i needed to come in for general anesthitc so he could see what was going on,i explained i was going away with my daughter to see family in NY that Friday and he said o jus go ahead and enjoy yourself and i will sort you out when u come back,so i did, great time lol then back to hos where got general done and he looked around and took biopsy, had to wait 3 weeks then they told me i had a tumour on my right hand side which extremely luckly had not went into my lymph nodes and spread,he said i truly was blessed that it was not in the nodes as it was in a area that generally did spread quickly but mine hadnt but he was still going to give me radiation on the nodes as well as the tumour just to be on safe side,i got 7 weeks with Matilda my mask (whom i have hanging on back garden fence in the hope that my daughter and friends who smoke mite just get afraid and give them up,hasnt worked ,wee birds nesting in it lol),anyway i am now 12 weeks post treartment and very slowly getting myself togather, can manage quite a lot of food now though most meat things stll a nono, what i am plagued with this last week is dry mouth, had had it slightly but not too bad but from Tuesday this week its been awful and my lips are nearly bleeding although i put lip balm on frequently, could anyone give me some tips on how to help it please,i would be very grateful xx

  • Its so good to know that Jameslee, hard for people to understand what the treatment entails,i was lucky as only slightly lost my taste and i dont like curry or spicyfood anyway so dont mind that but could cry when i make roast potatos and cant eat them,my daughter says look on bright side as i have lost about 2 stone so i guess thats good but think i would rather be fat and happy lol, will just have to learn to adapt but its very hard, cant help feeling sorry for myself, human nature i suppose, hope you have a good day :)

  • Thank you so much Steph,it has been great to find this forum, really helps me to know that other people understand what iam talking about, brillant service,Thanks again xx

  • Hi Dolly I’m doing ok thanks glad you have found a way to get the tablets down, try not lose too much weight Iv lost about 10 pounds and I’m steady now but my doc said it was important not to lose too much as it helps your recovery.

Some interesting comments I too find that food tastes weird now, things like a weak cup of tea tastes strong, I’m forcing myself to eat just to help my recovery but it’s strange feeling.

  • Hi dolly27

youre welcome anytime I’m here just leave a message and I reply none of this want to feel alone with it totally know and like I said no cancer or treatment is nice and no one wants it but all so different I know wat u mean as my cousin had breast cancer was poorly with treatment but seems to have come out the other side with no effects and I think with head and neck it’s the voice the mucus the coughing everything that goes with it  and still the fatigue which hit me hard so tired and yes no exactly were ur coming from and know u don’t mean it in a horrible way and yes hopefully all cured now

and I can’t even get in my old dentist wen I go for app with e n t  going to ask as my teeth need sorting meant to have all out before radiotherapy but I said no now there breaking well a few so must be very weak as don’t eat anything hard

well thank you and hope ur days been ok for u

    hugs to u

    Xx pauline

  • Hiya Pauline, will do with dentist tho dont go till Feb 8th,i went before my treatment started and i was terrified i would lose my teeth as i am really funny about teeth and think if they had said they needed to take them out i may well have said no as well, that scared me way more than losing my hair as the wigs nowadays are great but as my daughter says so are the dentures but you will need to be so careful as my dentist says that extractions can be a problem but coming off the smokes will deffo help,i used to smoke when i had a drink so 20 would last me a fortnight so much easier for me to stop,i know how hard it can be,hopefully if you get something that helps make your saliva work even a little bit better it will stop them breaking, apparently sugar free chewing gum helps a lot too and you can get the biotene gel in boots, its £7,50 for a tube and think it would last a good while if only using at night,my docs are really good i have to say and i get the biotine mouth wash on prescription and the saline water which i try to rinse with after i eat,was really good this morning but in blinking agony again now,i had stopped using the oramorph but my doc had told me to have a bottle handy just incase and i took a spoonful earlier,am also on liquid ibrufen and paracetomol and take 25mg slow release in morning and at night, have cut the slow release down from 50 at nite and morn and stopped the oramorph as i say and was hoping to get off the morphine soon as i also need to take the laxatives to counteract that,my chemist loves me lol,big hugs back x

  • Hi dolly 27

not long away for dentist and yes same as me something about teeth that’s why I said no to taking all out same as I said no to peg feed

just enough to go through I think without all that

I only lost a little hair at back but luckily grew back had so much hair cud not see it unless I put it up so left it down all the time didn’t even realise u cud till they told me and yes read some were on here about the problems I can have with teeth but of worry but glad didn’t pull them out well definitely hard to give up but will keep trying if I cud eat better that wud help as us at least snack on things to relieve cravings and things I’m sure I can do it with patches as I do worry a lot about it coming back and I know I can’t go through anymore treatment  I also had liquid ibuprofen and dissolved paracetamol off oncologist so that was good and some mouth wash but may also see if I can be prescribed some stuff for dry mouth they offered me this pretend saliva but don’t like sound of that or I check boots as well thank you for that and yes they all seem to cause constipation not good and I can imagine how much pain u are in so glad that I can say that it does get better with time all though feels forever while ur suffering as I say if u think of anything just ask no problem

and hugs right back to u hope u have a good night

    Pauline

  • Thank you Pauline, fills me with hope and i could do with that now because its really bad again,i have been on antibiotic for a week and finished today and i think that may have been making it worse so hopefully start picking up now thats finished ,talk soon, take care,God bless x

  • Hiya Pauline, had a appointment with a McMillan counsellor this morning and have to say it really helped me,i cried from i went in till i came out lol but it was good to have a good cry in front of someone who understood where i was coming from, explained about speaking to you and how that had helped me greatly because you told me the dry mouth does improve, was so good to talk to you because you knew what i was talking about whereas my friends and family dont have a clue and hopefully never will,in fairness to them had never heard of dry mouth either as only time i ever had one was if i overindulged the night before lol,am pleased too as last night i had a slice of fried bread,a frankfurter and fried egg and was able to eat the lot tho very slowly and it was cold by time i finished but didnt care cos i enjoyed it and today for lunch i managed a slice of toast and a boiled egg, wouldnt mean much to most people but for me small victorys in this battle so hopefully for us all we will all gradually get better, takes a long time but be worth it in the end, hope you enjoy your day,nap time for me i think, walked back from hospital, about 2 miles so that was good too but tired now, going to listen to my body from now on,Thanks again,Roisin xx
