Post Pelvic Radiation and blood in urine

In October 2012 I had a full hysteroctomy for womb cancer. I was told it was Stage 1, Grade 1 and no further treatment required.

I had medical insurance so all was carried out privately and I attended checkups every 3 - 6 months but I never had a scan in the 5 years that followed.

I started having bladder problems and vaginal pain in 2013 and advised my consultant about it.  Last year  in July I had to give up the health insurance as I could no longer afford it but I still went privately to my consultant for my 6 month check up. When I saw him in August he arranged for me to see a urologist and I got an appointment with her in November. On examining me she red flagged me for a hospital appointment.

I was given a bioposy were it was discovered I had vaginal cancer a recurrence od my previous cancer and was rold it was from cells left from my previous cancer.

I had treatment of Chemo/radiation and Brachytherapy and thankfully got the all clear when I got my scan 8 weeks after treatment finished.

I did suffer very bad nerve damage, horrible vagina and vulva pain, numbness in my legs and spent a week in hospital while a wonderful doctor sorted me out with drugs to control the pain.

I currently take MST morphine, Pregablin, Oral Morph and ketamine to keep the pain at bay.

However, for the past lot of months I have blood in my urine quite frequently. Oncologist sent me for a full CT scan in August and all was clear apart from a surgical clip they saw that was left from my hysteroctomy.

I still have this blood in my urine 9 months after treatment finished and my own GP thinks it could be an after effect of the Radio.

Anyone else experience this?

  • Hello akira101,

Poor you, you have certainly been through a lot in the past few years. I am glad though that this wonderful doctor you met at the hospital managed to sort out pain relief for you and I hope you are feeling more comfortable now.

I also hope you can get to the bottom of what is causing blood in your urine. It is good news the full CT scan was clear and it's interesting that your GP thinks this may be a side effect of your treatment. Has your GP given you any suggestions on how to deal with it or if you just have to live with this possible side effect? If you wanted to ask our nurses anything about your very specific situation, feel free to give them a call on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Hopefully some of our members who have experienced this will see your post and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,
