Chemo stopped due to after effects

Hi everyone

I have not posted for more than 2 months. I finished the EC chemo not easily and dose was reduced after first treatment as my neutrophils were below 1%. Then after 4 weeks started Taxol weekly which was fir 12 sessions. However, it was not easy sailing as all side effects were there with severity as sessions went on- like taste buds bitter, no appetite, diarrhoea, cramps, achy bones, lack of sleep, extreme tiredness. After 4 sessions dose was reduced by 20%, but after 5th dose as numbness, pins and needles got worse, so chemo has been stopped. Now ONC is going to start radiotherapy 4 weeks after last Taxol session.

Has anyone had chemo stopped?

How long after chemo stopped do nerves get better?

How long after chemo does taste improve?

I am concerned that radiotherapy is going to make me tired too when I am already feeling exhausted.

Any advice please.

  • Hello Rusk,

So sorry to hear your EC chemotherapy was not plain sailing and that you have had to stop the treatment as a result. I hope you will hear from others here who have also had chemotherapy stopped for similar reasons and that they will be along soon to share their story with you.

I hope your nerve issues get better soon. We have some information on our website here on nerve changes and cancer drugs which may be of interest to you. It includes tips to help cope with nerve changes. It might be worth mentioning these to your doctor and asking as well how long it took for taste to improve.

I hope the radiotherapy treatment goes well and that you won't feel too tired. Our section on radiotherapy for breast cancer contains a lot of useful information to help you prepare for treatment. If you have any questions on anything and live in the UK, don't forget our lovely team of nurses is only a free phone call away. You can reach them on 0808 800 4040 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

Hopefully you will also hear from others here who have had similar reactions to chemotherapy and/or have a few tips to share based on their own radiotherapy experience.

Keep in touch I hope everything goes well for you and that you feel better and less tired soon.

    Best wishes,
