Lack of chemo side effects!

My husband has non Hodgkin's lymphoma and just had his first chemo (r chop) on the 8th October. He felt absolutely fine during it, no reactions at all and since then he has had no side effects whatsoever. No nausea, tiredness, nothing! He's able to carry on as normal and although I'm obviously delighted for him I've a couple things in the back of my mind!

Does a lack of side effects mean it isn't working properly?!

Does chemo get worse after every one and is he being lulled into a false sense of security just now? Will it hit him after cycle 2?!

I know everyone reacts differently and there probably isn't a right or wrong answer to this but I'd really appreciate stories, advice and your experiences.

This is all so new!

  • Hi,

It just means he’s a lucky beggar lol

Seriously, side effects are not an indication of effectiveness in any way. I had the best outcome from chemo I could have wished for and kept all my hair throughout - despite being told everyone on my chemo regime lost all their hair including their eyelashes and eyebrows!

I did find the other side effects accumulated over time (especially exhaustion and neuro damage) but I have known some people sail through with no side effects at all!

    Good luck!

    Dave

  • Hi there,, don't worry about lack of side effects, my husband was the same and he was 72 years old.   It gets harder as it progresses so accept the good sessions and you never know he might sail through it.  Tiredness was the worst thing and sometimes lack of eating, if he's tired let him sleep, it's normal,  but live as normal as possible.   Hopefully all goes to plan.  X

  • Hi, I'm glad your husband had a good first chemo, I was the same. The third week I started losing my hair and came out in a rash but I kept thinking I can cope with this. Everyone is different. I'm on R-CVP for NHL. I lost the feeling on tips of fingers with the 2nd chemo but they reduced one of the chemo drugs, it's not too bad now. I just kept taking the anti sickness drugs and anything else they gave me. I'm on my 4th treatment and do get tired more now, but again I can cope with that. I wish you both well on this journey and hope it continues to go smoothly.

  • Hello!

My husband is currently going through chemotherapy and is in the middle of his 2nd cycle. Like some of you here he has had not adverse side effects. The only thing he really has experienced is the neuropathy in his fingers and on one occassion he experienced a throat spasm which scared him a bit but was ok after it passed and it was just a one off. He has also had problems with heartburn and indigestion and he let his team know this and they have given him indigestion tablets to take incase that happens again too. He hasn't been physically sick but has felt nauseous on occasions but apart from that he's doing ok. They upped his dosage of Capecitabine to 5 & 5 as he tolerated the first lot ok he's been feeling a little bit more tired mind you and his energy levels have went down slightly but apart from that he's fine. He's been eating and drinking as normal lost a slight amount of weight but not much but they're happy with his weight. His blood count seems to be ok too. Like the rest of you though I worry too that because he is tolerating this treatment so well, is it working?? Time will tell though as he progresses through these cycles if he'll get any worse or just stay the same.

  • Hi Vicky,

Please be assured that there is no correlation between the intensity of side effects and the efficacy of the chemo.

In my case I kept almost all my hair but had a super response to the chemo.

    Good luck!

    Dave

  • Hi Dave!

Thanks for that. I really hope I'm worrying over nothing. Everything so far with Jay's treatment has been good bu there is always that nagging feeling at the back of my head if the chemo is working because he is torlerating it so well. I think maybe he is one of the lucky ones where he gets no adverse side effects. The only thing he has been experiencing really is the neuropathy in his fingers (pin n needles) if he touches anything cold and just feeling that slightly more tired.. He's on Oxaliplatin by infusion once during his cycle and Capecitabine for 14 days. I worry too when he gets bloods taken incase something `nasty` shows in that too but thankfully his bloods have come back satisfactory and it shows his kidney function is good there has been an issue with that too in that he has some scarring in his kidneys caused from his operation to remove the tumour and it was thought he would need a stent fitted to prevent a blockage but he had a phone consultation with a urologist and he went through some questions with him and that for the fact he is passing urine as normal the urologist feels it is not necessary for him to have the stent fitted after all. So you see everything is going really well and I should be really thankful for that I know but as I said there is that nagging that somewhere down the line `BANG` something is going to go wrong. I'm just looking for reassurance.
