Chemo prep

So it’s looking like l will be starting chemo for my breast cancer in a couple of weeks. FEC-T x 6. I’ve already started to prepare by booking dental appointments and a flu jab this week but I’d really like to hear about what other things I should be doing to prepare myself.

What to do about the hair? Any wig/headwear recommendations?

What about the eyebrows...not sure I can cope with tattoos but has anyone tried the stick on ones?

I hear I should paint my nails.

I know everyone’s experience is different but any hints and tips on what to expect and managing my way through this?

It looks like one session will fall right before Xmas so no idea how this will work. MIL wants to host a big family dinner but I probably shouldn’t be mixing with people.

My mind is a whirl. Any advice gratefully received!

  • Can’t really help with most of this but my cousin went thro chemo last year and her nurses recommended putting dark colours on her nails to hide any discolouration.

The Look Good, Feel Better organisation can help with things like eyebrows as they can show you how to do a really natural line with pencil. Going to one of their sessions also gets you a humungous goody bag so might be worth seeing if your hospital has any of these! It’s a great confidence booster!

  • Thanks [@rileyroo]‍ I haven’t heard of look good feel better so I’m going to search for that. A goody bag sounds like just what I need!

  • There was some really good stuff in mine, designer names!  I wouldn’t/couldn’t afford those kind of prices but it’s a really lovely treat, I just gave a contribution at the end of the session I went to.

  • Hi, the first I did before my chemo was get my wig, I got a prescription/token from the hospital to purchase one. Once I had my wig I was relieved and prepared for the worse. It was the third week after my chemo my hair started coming out so at least I was prepared. I did buy false eyelashes but I didn’t need them as I didn’t lose my eyelashes.  Everyone is different but it helped me being prepared. I also bought a lot of sleep hats to save hair falling out on my pillow. I find my head so cold after taking my wig off so my hat goes on. The hospital should give you anything else you need if you have sore mouths etc. I wish you good luck on your treatment. I’m on my 4th now and doing well.

  • Thanks [@scones]‍ The chemo is the bit I’ve beem dreading the most. I’ve heard so many horror stories so it’s great to hear a positive experience. I must get on the case with the wigs. So much time has been spent with specialists dealing with the cancer side, not much time to think about hair loss...

  • Hiya,

Good luck I hope it all goes well for you.

My mum had her first session last week and it really wasn't as scary as she (and the rest of us) had thought. The horror stories we hear are scary but as long as you have a positive mindset im sure you willbe fine. The side effects are different for everyone, hopefully you get as minimal as possible.

You should receive a chemo diary from your nurse which is extremely helpful as you can tick off the symptoms youve experienced each day and write  down how you are feeling. This will help you find a pattern so that after each session you have a better idea of what to expect.

Our consultant adviced you can eat and drink whatever you want. If anyone tells you to cut back on sugar or dairy etc the dieticians confirm these are all myths! Eat and drink as you please. Your tastebuds will be effected but keep to your usual routine of eating times.

You can get a wig on prescription or of course buy your own. There are alot of lovely headscarfs out there too, will give you a reason for a shopping spree! Most highstreet stores sell them, theyre not difficult to find at all.

Since your immune system will be low, you just need to be slightly more careful of catching other peoples germs esp now its winter. That doesnt mean you cant go out though. Keep anti bacterial gel with in your bag so you can use it when you are out.

I really wish you all the best xx
